Installation of Artwork created by Maynard Johnny, Jr.

The Thetis Island Community Association Board of Directors is honoured to announce the installation of artwork created by Penelakut artist Maynard Johnny Jr. on the exterior of the new Forbes Hall Community Centre.

This commission was done in the Spirit of Reconciliation and speaks to the bridging of the Penelakut people and Thetis Islanders.

Maynard Johnny, Jr. and Peter de Hoog (Architect) were on hand to oversee the installation.

There will be a formal unveiling and dedication of the art along with a community celebration in mid-September.

Yoga with Karen

What to bring:

There are no yoga mats or props available at the Hall, so please bring your own Yoga mat for sure. If you have blocks/straps bring those too, and maybe a cushion to sit on.  If you don’t have blocks be creative and bring books, if no straps bring belt/tie/scarf.

Ideally no heavy meal right before class, a light snack about 1 hour before is fine.

Please continue to self-assess and stay home if you are feeling unwell, thank you.

I will be at the Hall early to get set up and let you all in, please leave your shoes in the cloakroom.

Each class will be by donation, all donations will go towards Forbes Hall.  Please bring cash if you have it, (hopefully you may have some lying around that you have been unable to use over the last 16 months) thank you!

Looking forward to meeting you all soon!

Love,

Karen

Cherry Plums

Beat the Birds and the Racoons!

We have a tree full of cherry plums. Before they are all consumed by our animal friends, if anyone would like to come and pick on Wednesday (we have ladders), let us know via email on first come first serve basis. They make great jam! Probably require a week or so of ripening once picked (so says Google)! You will need to bring your own containers.

Recording Now Available of June 30th Listening Circle with Penelakut Elders

A recording of the Listening Circle that was held online June 30, 2021.

The Listening Circle was led by Coast Salish Elders Florence James and Raymond Tony Charlie, along with Florence's son Rocky James, all members of Penelakut Tribe. It was hosted by the Centre for Global Studies (CFGS) and the POLIS Project on Ecological Governance (POLIS) at the University of Victoria. Opening and closing remarks were contributed by CFGS Director Dr. Oliver Schmidtke and the event was organized and facilitated by POLIS Co-director Dr. Kelly Bannister.

The Listening Circle was organized in the spirit of listening and learning from local Indigenous Elders to better understand what reconciliation requires of us, after the deeply disturbing news of 215 children found in an unmarked mass burial site at the former Kamloops Residential School, on Tk’emlups te Secwépemc First Nation in Kamloops. Since the Listening Circle was held, news of more many unmarked graves continue to be reported across our country, including on Penelakut Island in connection with the former Kuper Island Residential Institution. Elder Florence James, Elder Raymond Tony Charlie and Rocky James shared their stories and wisdom with care, conviction, courage and compassion so we can all learn. To be part of healing and catalyzing real change for true reconciliation, we must first listen attentively to Indigenous Elders and leaders who are speaking with courage, strength and wisdom to guide this important moment in our shared history.

A special moment during the Listening Circle was reading of a poem written by Elder Raymond Tony Charlie, to be included in his forthcoming book "In the Shadow of the Red Brick Building." In response to many requests from participants of the Listening Circle, Ray Tony has generously made the poem available to share in advance of his book. The poem can be found here: https://poliswaterproject.org/files/2021/06/Poem_FINAL_Updated.pdf

Community Paramedic Alternative

Unfortunately, as this time, Community Care Paramedic face-to-face patient visits or Blood Pressure clinics will not be possible until BCEHS hires a new Community Paramedic in Chemainus for the position.

The position is still vacant; however, BCEHS do have a Community Paramedic who is available to provide virtual wellness checks for patients.

The virtual wellness checks would consist of phone check-ins or home health monitoring for the patients. For those patients who could benefit from this service, BCEHS would require a Patient Specific Service Referral form to be filled out – if you would like a form emailed to you, please contact me at chief11@telus.net.
