Thetis Island Improvement District AGM

The Thetis Island Improvement District will hold its Annual General Meeting on Saturday July 10th at 11 AM, Via Zoom. 

This public meeting is to receive the audited financial statements for 2020, to report on the operations of the Thetis Island Volunteer Fire Department, the Improvement District, and whatever other items of business may be raised.

Forbes Hall Garden Committee

One of many improvements at our expanded hall is the opportunity for increased planting. 

TICA approached Emily McIvor, Thetis Island resident and garden designer, to come up with a drought tolerant, deer-resistant plan. Emily's proposal reflects her broad knowledge of plants and gardens and was well received by gardening enthusiasts involved with TICA. 

The garden will enhance the ambiance of our community centre and serve to demonstrate a variety of plants that can be used in gardens on Thetis.  A small Garden Committee has been formed to oversee the landscaping and maintenance of the grounds.  There are many keen gardeners on Thetis and it is hoped that you will be interested in supporting the garden at the hall in various ways.  A "Friends of the Garden" group could assist with planting, weeding, watering, deadheading, trimming, etc.

Dogs and Hot Weather

The next five days are forecasted to be very hot.

Take care of your dogs by making sure they are kept in cool areas.  They should not be able to lie in full sun – they do not know better!  These areas could be inside your home in rooms with good ventilation, and little direct sun.  Outside, these could be areas that are not in direct sun the whole time your dog is confined to that space.  Make sure they have lots of fresh water, most dogs love ice, put a big chunk in their water bowl.  Refill their bowls several times through the day.  

Gentle exercising should be done early in the day, preferably before the temperature rises over 24 degrees. The earlier the better, your job as your dogs’ guardian is to keep them quiet and safe.  Swimming is great but retreat from the sea into the shade once you’re done.  Leash them if you need to, to keep them in the shade. Encourage water play so the water gets right to their skin, this will help keep them cooler far longer.

For double coated dogs who have been shaved (which they never should have been unless for a medical reason), you need to keep them cool, spritz them with water several times a day.  Well-groomed double coated dogs do well in the heat, following the same rules as you would for any dogs. If your dog hasn’t had a good brush in a while get to it today – open hairs insulate, whereas matted hairs do not.  

Their life is literally in your hands during high heat periods.

Concerned Citizens or Just a Citizen?

Another anonymous letter has been delivered and we wonder about its credibility. Is it really a group of concerned citizens or one disgruntled one who might not be able to build their planned breakwater?

We are, of course, talking of the proposed changes and upgrades to the Islands Trust Policy Statement and the fear mongering being raised by said citizen(s).

We find the changes and proposal to be quite reasonable and fit well with our vision of island life. We support our elected representatives in this regard.

Helen Burchell Memorial Stone Set Right

Keep your eyes peeled for more info in the coming days!

St.Margaret’s cemetery wishes to thank Norm Kasting and Glen Andison along with side kick Gurk Sarioglu for the ingenuity and muscle used to correct the tilting Helen Burchell Memorial stone at the cemetery.

It took several hours of careful excavating and lifting of the 5-foot high very heavy granite memorial to get it standing upright and level.

It is now standing straight and tall as it once did in the past.
