The Youth Behind the Movement: A Climate Activism Webinar

Hello fellow Thetis Islanders,

I just wanted to share with you an event I am organizing with the Cowichan Valley Earth Guardians crew.On Sunday June 28th at 2:00PM on the Zoom conferencing platform, six youth climate activists (including myself) will talk on a panel about youth climate activism.

The hope of this event is to unmask the youth behind the movement and share what climate activism has meant to them as they oppose one of the greatest issues of our time. The event also seeks to share with adults the vision youth have for the future and begin to dismantle age-based biases around the topic of climate change. This starts with having intergenerational conversations and creating spaces for youth to represent themselves and their ideas.

For more information about the event click here:  https://cowichanvalleyearthguardians.wordpress.com/2020/06/05/youth-in-climate-activism-webinar/

Free Items

Basketball hoop with stand, 3 boxes of VHS tapes, old swing set frame, suitable for mini green house (not useable as swing set), old trampoline frame (would need some new springs and new bed to use as a trampoline), but great as a shelter for chickens.

Also old fibreglass hot tub, 8ft  x 8ft.   Needs new heater element if you want to use it as a hot tub, but good for holding water for fire fighting or live stock.    If not claimed I will just be cutting it up and land fill.

I am on the island Thursday June 11 through Sat June 13 so you can pick up.

Jollity Farm: Thetis Island Goat Meat (Chevon)

Our one-year-old goats are pasture raised year round. When forage is low in winter, they get free choice, high protein local hay supplemented with grain. They have access to omri-certified kelp supplement and trace minerals to ensure a good balance in their diet, resulting in healthy animals and nutrient dense meat.

Goats are "browsers" and are truly animals of our Thetis Island terroir, working various plots of land, eating blackberry & maple leaves, farm veggies and specially grown forage crops including millet, turnip & kale greens.

Young goat meat is prized for its lean, but tender and flavourful characteristics. It's more mild in flavour than lamb, but not as rich or greasy. Goat is especially rich in protein and iron and contains modest fat & cholesterol making it a good choice for a high protein, low fat diet.

Here are popular and traditional cuts selected by our Butcher for the most efficient cut & best value.

Whole Goat

6 packs Ground (1 lb packages)

8 Leg steaks (approx. 0.75lb each) or whole leg roast

2 packages spare ribs

4 Loin chops (4 per package) or 1 loin roast

4 Rack chops (4 per package) or 1 whole rack

2 package Neck chops (3-4 chops per package)

2 shanks (2 per package)

*includes soup bones & organs (if requested)

Approx. 34 lbs of meat x $16.62/lb

Abattoir Fee: $60

Approx. total per whole goat: $625.08

Goat Side

1/2 of sample cut list above

*includes soup bones & organs (if requested)

Approx. 17 lbs meat x $18.24/lb

Abattoir Fee: $60

Approx. total per side of goat: $370

Reminder: Phone Book 2020

The phone book is almost done, but there are still a few people, mostly ones new to the island, who I can't include because I can't reach them to get their permission or their details.

Having at least some contact information in the phone book is a considerable aid to the Fire Department/First Responders.  There's no obligation to do it, and we certainly don't put anyone in there without permission, but if you would care to be included, please let me know in the next two weeks.

The next book won't come out for another two years, so now's the time to think about it!

AED LOCATION REMINDER

We want to remind everyone that the closest AED to the Tennis Court and the community trail entrance on Mission Road is on the front porch of the Fire Hall.  There is mostly okay cell service on Mission Road closer to the tennis court trail.  Dial 911 as you move to get the AED.

In case of cardiac arrest, start COR immediately and send someone for the AED.  If you are the only person there, do chest compressions for two full minutes and then go and get the AED.  Don’t forget to call 911.

The AED, once turned on, will talk you through the procedure.
