By the way, the best way to reduce waste is to fix it and reuse it!

Thank You to our Community

This week once again showed us the strength of Mother Nature! With power and phones down, we become reliant on ourselves and one another to get through it.

I’d like to thank the TIVFD for their work at keeping us safe with the mess on Mission Road, and other spots on Thetis. With a pole snapped and all lines broken, members worked on our behalf to inform BC Hydro of the urgency to get the critical infrastructure, that runs above Mission Road, connected ASAP. This section of power was restored Friday, just after 5 pm. TELUS lines were still disconnected Saturday for this section, but that will be rectified soon.

On Wednesday, the Soup’s On team arrived at Forbes Hall where they were greeted by an early-arriving member of the Power’s Out Team. The Soup’s On crew worked hard feeding over 100 lunches, washing and sanitizing all dishes by hand. Wonderful to see that Forbes Hall was up to its first real test of providing to the community during an emergency.

On Thursday, with the power still not restored until late in the day, Island Health’s Nurses arrived for the COVID / Flu Vaccine Clinic. With no internet, everything was done “old school”, which meant that all the documentation uploads would be done back at their offices, from hand-written forms. Not that this is a terrifically difficult step, but the way they just took it in stride and got on with the job was impressive.

There were Power’s Out Team members on-site from the morning, right through the day, allowing for community members to have warm beverages and snacks, and many visits. With people still visiting, it was hard to tell when the clinic had ended!

So, thank you, dear Thetis Island Community, for stepping up and finding ways to make some long, dark, cold days cheerier and safer.

Soup’s On Needs a few Volunteers in December

On December 11th and 18th, Soup’s On will not have the 3 students from Capernwray volunteering at Soup’s On, as they will have left for Christmas break.

Therefore, we are looking for community members to help us out.
No special training required, just a willingness to help the community for these two lunches. Set up, take down, kitchen help, dishwashing etc.

Please contact Ann Dickie at dickie.ann@gmail.com or 250-246-4079 if you’re willing and able.

3+ volunteers are needed for both days. Plan to arrive at 10:30 am and finish by 2:00 pm.

All volunteers receive lunch.

Thanks

CVRD Regional Parks & Trails Master Plan

All Thetis Islands taxpayers fund the CVRD Regional Parks & Trails.

Should the Thetis Island Wharf be included under the CVRD Regional Parks like other CVRD wood structures?

The CVRD is the owner of the Thetis Island Wharf. Having all CVRD taxpayers funding the wharf instead of only Thetis and Hudson Island taxpayers might be a way of reducing Thetis Island CVRD taxation. The wharf is used by many others - tourists, BC Ferries, ferry workers, etc. The wharf use by the Thetis Island Medical Evacuation team would not change.

There is an online survey in the following link.https://www.planyourcowichan.ca/regional-parks-trails-master-plan

Wooden Picture Frames Needed

Dear Thetis Island Humans,

Hi, it’s me, Athenia! I’m working hard on some needle felting art for the School Fundraising Table at the Christmas Market. I’m going to sell it and donate half of what I make to my school.

But here’s the thing - I need wooden frames to frame my art and some thin but really ridged cardboard for the backing. My mom raised me to use upcycled or handmade things, but I don’t know how to make frames, and she doesn't have time (I don't know why).

So, does anyone have any wooden picture frames, 8x10 and smaller? Anyone have some really sturdy thin cardboard. I would really appreciate it.

See you all at the market, stop by to see my art.

Thank you so much!

From,

Athenia (9 years old) and my dog Sparkles
