Birthday Thank You!

Ron Hyatt was very surprised and very pleased to receive your Birthday Wishes cards on his 98th birthday last Thursday.

He phoned quite a few well wishers to thank you personally but was unable to contact you all, so from Ron and his family, thank you for surprising him and marking the day for him.

Pickup Needed by Fire Dept

The TIVFD has been given a “drop tank” frame by the Malahat Fire Dept. to refurbish and store to deploy during wildfire season if needed.  We need someone with a pickup who will be travelling to or from Victoria that can stop by the Malahat Fire Dept. and can pick up the folded metal frame from outside of their hall and transport it home to us. The folded frame is about 8’ long and approx. 80lbs.

Please contact Jeannine at 250-252-0544 or the Duty Officer at 250-252-0228 if you can help us out.

Many thanks.

Did You Feel It?

The Shake Out BC Earthquake Drill on Thursday morning at 10:17 was a success.

After checking that their own families were safe, the available firefighters and water auxiliary team members responded to both of the firehalls and got the vehicles out and away from possible collapsing structures. Engine 1 and the Rescue arrived at the school to check on the students and await possible dispatched calls for structure fires or debris entrapment.

The school students explained how they had to “drop, cover and hold on” until the shaking stopped and then left their building in an orderly manner and waited in their “meeting spot” away from the building and overhead power lines.  They all knew about staying away from windows and getting under something solid when things start falling.  They even knew about why everyone should have shoes or slippers right beside their beds at home (getting out with glass on the floor) and where to meet up with families.

Thank you Auxiliary Water Transport Team members and Volunteer Fire Fighters and Ginny and Simone and all the Thetis Island School students for thinking about and practising what to do when the Big One finally happens.  Being prepared is being smart.

Dear Thetis Islanders,

Well I had an outstanding year on Maternity Leave. Becoming a parent is one of the most fascinating gifts to life there is. What a journey it was nurturing my baby Lucien to 1 years old!

This past year I was beyond excited to come back to the MV Kuper, as it is the most memorable job I’ve ever had! I was very fortunate to be surrounded by so many great people!

Due to Various circumstances; I’m truly sad to say I won’t be able to return.. It was a pleasure serving all the wonderful passengers; of the MV Kuper. Thank you! I shall remember the past 4 years with bliss, and look back with pride; at the great opportunity bestowed upon me.

My POA has been transferred to Nanaimo, perhaps I’ll occasionally see a few familiar faces there.

Take care,

Shyann Jack
