From the Programming Outreach Committee

In anticipation of the reopening of Forbes Community Hall it is our intent to reach out to as many islanders as possible to see how they visualize using the renewed and expanded space. 

As a first step we are planning to meet with known hall user group leaders. We would like information as to how you envisage using the hall in the future. We need to establish your needs as to how much time, what kind of space, and storage area your group will require. Leaders can expect to receive email invitations to meet with the committee at the hall soon. These meetings will probably be scheduled at the weekends or after 4 pm weekday afternoons. We hope that the hall will be busy and open every day, whether it be to participate in existing activities, new ventures or just to hang out. 

If you are an "Islander" who has an activity or hobby that you would like to introduce and lead, please contact one of the committee members so we can include you in our meeting schedule.

Although local government has and continues to undertake emergency preparedness measures, it is

critical that individuals and families prepare to look after their own needs for a minimum of seven days.

To help you do this, Cowichan Valley Emergency Management published an Emergency Preparedness

Workbook available online at

Copies are also available from your LERN captain.

A segment titled “26 Weeks to Emergency Preparedness” in particular, will help you plan and actualize

your family's preparations.

Once a week for the next 26 weeks we will send the weekly recommendations to E-spokes. Please

consider implementing them as soon as and as best you can.

Week 1

Identify safe places in your home and on your property. Practice earthquake 'drop, cover, and hold” and

all the possible ways of getting out of your house. Thetis Island has challenging terrain. Give thought to

how you might have to evacuate if usual routes are cut off. Talk to your LERN captain about alternate

egress points. (see pages 36 & 42 in the Workbook. Earthquake and fire issues.)

Please refer to the Emergency Preparedness Workbook for much more information, especially page 2

regarding Grab and Go kits and ICE entries on your cell phone for your emergency contacts.

Remember that the Thetis Island Phone Book ( pages 3 through 7) are a ready and thorough aid to

Emergency Planning.
