Thetis Island Parents of Little Ones

Hi Moms & Dads!

I am a new mom to a beautiful little girl born September 3.

Like every other baby out there she is growing through her clothing faster than I can keep up. Currently I am giving her out grown clothing to 3 other moms on Thetis.

I am interested to know if there are other moms who would like to join together to create a Thetis Island Swap & Share of baby clothing? If you are interested in getting involved in this then please email me with your name, prefered contact method, gender and age of your baby.

Once I have a list I will contact everyone to share the list so that you can pass on your items. Parents helping parents!!

Thank you!

Bat Week? It's for the Bats!

As Halloween approaches, bat enthusiasts around BC are celebrating and supporting bats by participating in International Bat Week (October 24-31).

Bat Week is all about appreciating these amazing animals and their benefits, from eating insects to pollinating the agave plant used to make tequila.  Take a moment to learn about the many ways bats contribute to our lives, and what you can do locally for bats, at www.batweek.org or through the BC Community Bat Program at www.bcbats.ca.

“Bats in BC help control agricultural and forest pests, as well as mosquitoes in our yards - but now bats need our help” says Mandy Kellner, Coordinator for the BC Community Bat Program. “The conservation of bats in BC has always been important, since over half the species in this province are considered at risk. With the continuing spread of White-nose Syndrome in Washington State, bat conservation is more important than ever.”

White-nose Syndrome (WNS) is a disease caused by an introduced fungus, first detected in North America in a cave in New York in 2006. Since it was discovered, it has spread to 33 states and 7 provinces in North America, decimating bat populations along the way. “Luckily, WNS is not yet in BC” continues Kellner, “But we are preparing for its arrival by raising awareness about bats, working with landowners who have bats in buildings, enhancing bat habitat, and monitoring populations.”

Monitoring for WNS in BC will continue this winter, with Community Bat Programs requesting reports of dead bats or sightings of winter bat activity starting November 1. You can report sightings to Rob Welsh, your Thetis Island Community Bat Program Coordinator, at

250-246-1547or rmwelsh@telus.net

The provincial program can be contacted directly through www.bcbats.ca, info@bcbats.ca, or 1-855-922-2287.

In partnership with the BC Ministry of Environment, and funded by the Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation, Forest Enhancement Society of BC, Habitat Stewardship Program, and regional funders, the BC Community Bat Program provides information about bats in buildings, conducts site visits to advise landowners on managing bats in buildings, coordinates the Annual Bat Count, and offers educational programs on bats.

To find out more about the BC Community Bat Program, BatWeek activities, and options for helping local bat populations, please contact Rob Welsh as above or visit www.bcbats.ca or call 1-855-922-2287.

Pickup Needed by Fire Dept

The TIVFD has been given a “drop tank” frame by the Malahat Fire Dept. to refurbish and store to deploy during wildfire season if needed.  We need someone with a pickup who will be travelling to or from Victoria that can stop by the Malahat Fire Dept. and can pick up the folded metal frame from outside of their hall and transport it home to us. The folded frame is about 8’ long and approx. 80lbs.

Please contact Jeannine at 250-252-0544 or the Duty Officer at 250-252-0228 if you can help us out.

Many thanks.

Did You Feel It?

The Shake Out BC Earthquake Drill on Thursday morning at 10:17 was a success.

After checking that their own families were safe, the available firefighters and water auxiliary team members responded to both of the firehalls and got the vehicles out and away from possible collapsing structures. Engine 1 and the Rescue arrived at the school to check on the students and await possible dispatched calls for structure fires or debris entrapment.

The school students explained how they had to “drop, cover and hold on” until the shaking stopped and then left their building in an orderly manner and waited in their “meeting spot” away from the building and overhead power lines.  They all knew about staying away from windows and getting under something solid when things start falling.  They even knew about why everyone should have shoes or slippers right beside their beds at home (getting out with glass on the floor) and where to meet up with families.

Thank you Auxiliary Water Transport Team members and Volunteer Fire Fighters and Ginny and Simone and all the Thetis Island School students for thinking about and practising what to do when the Big One finally happens.  Being prepared is being smart.
