The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy Venting Index is the result of data collected on weather, pressure, winds etc. On Poor or ‘NO” days in our Southern Vancouver Island zone you cannot light your burn pile. The smoke generated would not dissipate effectively and will cause increased airshed pollution and health risks.
Thetis Island “enjoys” about eight months of the year of open burning, five of them with no permit required. Elsewhere in the Cowichan Valley area there is either no open burning whatsoever, or is restricted to a few weeks in winter. And the Venting Index during those few weeks may restrict the burning opportunities to only a few days.
In order for us to keep open burning in all but the four wildfire danger months here, we have to play by the rules. Vancouver Island residents are just as able as we are to check the Venting Index and call if they see smoke on Thetis Island on a NO Day.
Check the Venting Index daily; it’s updated every morning at 07:30 a.m. Find it on the Thetis Island Fire website or phone the number we have posted at the ferry or the solid waste facility. Use it or we lose it!

Local government elections in small communities depend on voter turn out.
This is your island, your choice for Trustee counts and every vote is important.
You have, three candidates running for two seats at the Islands Trust and 4 candidates running for one seat at the Regional District as well as two important referendum decisions brought to you by the CVRD.
I have two more open house opportunities to chat about what is important to you on Thetis and the surrounding Trust area this Saturday October 13th and on Tuesday the 16th, coffee and tea will be on 1:00 till 4:00. If you are attending the Thinc session in the main hall on Saturday please stop in and say hi.
Advance voting is still available Tuesday October 16th at the Frank Jameson Community Centre, 810 Sixth Avenue in Ladysmith

Our neutered cat Misha has been missing for three days. He usually likes his food too much and does not stay away for more than a day.
He is a VERY friendly and affectionate tabby cat. He is medium sized, short haired, with a dark stripe along his back, and a black tipped tail.
We do miss him and would really appreciate if you could let us know if you have seen him. Thank you so much, Simone 250-246-4802

BC Hydro has planned an island-wide power outage for regular maintenance of THURSDAY, OCTOBER 18 from 9 am to 3pm.
Coincidentally, October 18th is BC ShakeOut Day, where the entire province can practise earthquake preparedness with a simulated earthquake at 10:18 am (tune in for rumbling noise on local radio stations.)
The CVRD Emergency Alert Notification System will also be tested that morning. Many of you already signed up for that at last week’s Soups-On. If you missed the great bowl of soup and CVRD Sybille Sanderson’s sign-up table, you can sign up on line by going to the CVRD website and search for Emergency Alert Registration.
Since we know the power will be out anyway, what a great time to get ready and be prepared for “the big one”. How will you fare during an extended disaster?
