Canada Day ~ July 1st Sail Past

Sorry for the late notice folks.  The July 1st Sail Past is on again!  Decorate your boats and come enjoy an afternoon on the water sailing/cruising around Penelakut and Thetis.

1:30pm: Depart from Thetis Island Marina

1st Pitstop: Tent Island

2nd Pitstop: Penelakut Spit

Regroup at Thetis Island Marina

Reminder – please NO water balloons in boats this year.  Let’s give the fish another break from balloons lost at sea.

Please note:  The evening gathering/picnic will not be held at Don’s beach this year.  We will gather in Dunfield Park at the Thetis Island Marina and support our one and only local restaurant.  Any musicians who wish to liven up the evening are welcome to do so!

This event will take place rain or shine.  Any questions - please contact Tricia Hunter 246-8954 hunter_studio@hotmail.com

Looking forward to seeing many decorated boats at sea on Monday!

TIVFD: Timely Reminder

As we head deeper into fire season and the expectation of a High Hazards Activity shutdown in the near future, we want to remind you that the fire trucks and the rescue truck need a 12’ wide clearance and a 16’ height clearance on your driveway to be able to access you in an emergency.

Please ensure nothing from the December storm has come lower and that branches are cleared back. Even small branches could take out a Radio Aerial and cause communications problems for the fire department.

We won’t be coming down your driveway if it isn’t cleared.

Thank you for making sure your lot number is visible from both directions.

Does anyone have a metal detector?

I am looking for a metal standpipe that was obliterated by a falling tree in the December storm.

Can’t find it visually... if I can find that pipe I can restore my irrigation system.

If you can help please call Carol 250-246-3699

Dr. Peter Thompson receives UNESCO Anton Bruun Medal

From a little boy playing on the beaches of Thetis, to spending most of his adult career on the Open Ocean working with CISRO / Australia, Dr. Peter Thompson was just awarded the Anton Bruun Medal from Unesco in Paris, France today, June 29th. Recognizing his huge life-long contribution to the understanding of the effects of Climate Change to Phytoplankton.

Peter still comes home to Thetis every year or two.  Our family is so very proud of this accomplishment!

Community Letters

Having been coming to Thetis Island for 70 years I have noticed quite a few changes over the years. New roads, electricity, phones, ferries, new residents and of course the addition of Forbes Hall. The land was donated to the community to build a hall where Thetis Islanders would have a place to meet and help build a community. It provided a place where islanders could socialize, exercise, read and learn new skills.

When I decided to retire and live on Thetis almost full time, I realized what an asset Forbes Hall was for the whole community. It was the Hub of the island. How many of you have met islanders who have become life long friends? It gave me the opportunity to learn and participate in new activities such as Scottish Country Dancing, Yoga and Tai Chi.

It also gave me the opportunity to participate in one of my favourite pastimes, cooking. Being able to volunteer to help out with Soup’s On, Seniors Dinners, Soiree, Burns Dinner and café TICA amongst other events has been one of my greatest pleasures. Where else could you volunteer to help out at so many varied events and where you could meet so many interesting and vibrant individuals.

Forbes Hall has provided the space for people to meet, discuss and implement new programs and ideas that have helped this Island to grow positively. Think of how much more can be accomplished with a new enhanced Forbes Hall.
