Getting Prepared for Wildfire Season

As you will have noticed from the rainfall statistics posted on e-Spokes yesterday, we are already in a drying trend. We have now moved up to MODERATE fire danger. If you have a yard waste permit valid until May 15th, please be aware that there is increased risk from sparks and embers and monitor your burn closely, with tools and water ready to extinguish and a phone available to call 911 if needed.

Keep your campfires small in the evening and watch the wind. Your campfire is extinguished properly if you would have no worries about setting a baby’s bare bottom on it.

One of the best preparations for Wildfire Season is to start or continue Fire Smarting your property. We have the Provincial Fire Smart program on Thetis Island and our Fire Smart technician, Stu Downey, is ready to assist you (250-210-2789).

To All Mooring Buoy Owners Around Thetis Island

T.I.M.A. has become aware of a number of mooring buoys in the Harbour that appear to be unmarked, in disrepair or possibly abandoned.

In the interest of safety, navigation, and good stewardship of the harbour, T.I.M.A.is working to ensure that all buoy owners have a way to ensure their buoys are correctly and clearly marked and that ground tackle is inspected/maintained regularly.

If you are unsure about the status of your buoy or need a hand, we are happy to help!. We can assist with the inspections, sourcing or applying proper markings (i.e., name and telephone number) locating your buoy and registered on the TIMA mooring map.

Let’s work together to keep Telegraph Harbour safe, organized and enjoyable for everyone.

Pollinator and Perennial Starts for Sale + More Dahlias!

Some unique starts for your perennial gardens, pick up this weekend:

Figwort:

A prolific and fascinating perennial you may have seen at the PAG or in our bouquets. Its flowers are tiny cups that smell like peanuts, and the pollinators go absolutely wild for them. Likes full sun to part shade and can tolerate wet soils.

Available in 4” ($7) and gallon pots ($15)

Sea Holly:

Another bee favourite, Sea Holly is easily recognized by its gorgeous iridescent blue spiky flowers. Easy to grow and drought-tolerant once established.

Available in 4” ($7) and 1/2-gallon pots ($15)

Kaleidoscopic Grex Kale:

Dreams can come true, a kale that comes back year after year!

Large striking plants with variegated leaves. Edible at all stages: early leaves in salad, later season leaves cooked or as wraps, and of course sweet broccoli-like flower shoots.

Available in 4” pots ($7)

Dahlia tubers:

There are a few dahlia tubers left! The “Farm mix” contains x5 orange, white and pink colour flowers, $18.

Sprouting and ready to plant.

Great Lunch at the Repair Fair – Saturday, May 3rd

Yes, the TICA Food Services Committee will be providing a delicious lunch at the Repair Fair!

Come for the repair info, stay for the food. Or come for the food and stay for the repair info.

First though here is a short poem provided by Simone Luckham:

Blunt needles dancing, stitch by stitch,

Mending the garment with love and care.

Darning with laughter, bright and rich,

At the repair fair, joy fills the air!

A cheerful little rhyme to celebrate the beauty of fixing things together. Hope this makes you smile!

Repair Fair Lunch Menu:

$12 Soup with Salad & Bread

$12 Sandwich with Salad

Soup: Greek-style Lentil Soup with fresh herbs & Feta garnish

Sandwich: Grilled Turkey & Provolone with pesto-mayo & roasted red peppers on a Ciabatta Bun

Salad: Rustic Veggie Chop - Mixed greens base with roasted sweet potatoes, marinated chickpeas & tofu, seeds & herbs, orange-cardamom dressing.

Most diets can be accommodated.

The Beverage Station will also be open for drinks and snacks.

Come to the Repair Fair, Saturday May 3, Forbes Hall 10:00 until 2:00

A presentation of the Community Climate Resilience Group
