Thetis Island Elementary School ~ Needs & Requests

Listening to students read: We need more listeners and readers at the Elementary school.  The contact information is below. 

We are still looking for more old tennis balls. 

We need a  soccer coaches to help out with soccer. 

We would like more fruit for our fall projects of fund raising and helping out a charity.

Unofficial Well Survey

Twenty people sent me their well information for the unofficial survey on how water levels were doing half-way through this drought period.  Usually September is when most wells are at their lowest, and the info people were sending was from July and the beginning of August.  These were for wells located all over the island.

Three locations (one in Foster Point neighbourhood, one in the Forbes Road neighbourhood,  and one in the Moore Hill area) reported dry or almost dry and murky wells.  These wells ranged from <100’ to >300’.  2 people reported 50% of normal volume for that time of year. Most people had no well issues at all and most of those were storing water in tanks and by having “well-minders” on their systems not heavily drawing down the water column constantly. Several people reported that they have no idea how their well is doing because they have no means of measuring the column, but because they store water and the tanks are always topped up, they felt they were having no issues during the past couple of months when our region hit drought level 4.

Some people have hedged their bets by also storing rainwater for garden irrigation and are using their well water for potable water only.

In looking at the results, this does not appear to be (yet) an abnormal year for well water levels in most cases.

Let’s all hope the heavy rains come soon though (preferably at night!).

Road Sharing

School starts this week! 

Kids, bicycles, parents with strollers, students running for fitness, will all be back on our roadways in large numbers.  Soon the grey and slick days will start, it will be darker earlier and lighter later. Plan to keep your eyes more peeled and speed down all over the island starting this week.  

The speed limit in front of the school is 30 kmh/hr from 8 am to 5 pm.  But always slow down when walkers or kids on bicycles (or ponies!) are on the road. 

Remember, we don’t have sidewalks so we have to share safely.

September 8th at the Nature House: Humpback Whales presentation by Marine Education and Research Society (MERS) researcher Jackie Hildering

In addition to sharing MERS’ research on Humpback feeding strategies and rate of entanglement, Jackie will discuss how the fortunate return of these giants from the brink of extinction necessitates increased boater awareness about avoiding collision and what to do if entanglement is witnessed.

As an educator, cold water diver and underwater photographer, Jackie is known as “The Marine Detective” with on-camera experience including being featured on Animal Planet’s “Wild Obsession” series and in the BBC productions “New threat to Canada's Pacific Humpback Whales?” and “Ingenious Animals”.  She has been referenced as the stand-up comic of marine conservation.

This event indeed promises to be informative and entertaining!

At the Portal, 254 North Cove Rd. Doors open at 6:30 pm and the presentation starts at 7:00 pm.
