Thanks from Thetis Island School

The parents, staff and students of Thetis Elementary School send a sincere thanks to all community members and BC Ferries staff for your understanding and cooperation over the last few weeks when our group was booked for swim lessons on Thursday mornings. We are pleased to report that the kids had a successful set of lessons and relieved that no one was left behind on our trips! We have revised our scheduled lesson times for next year to avoid the "busy 8:05 Thursday ferry" issue from arising again.

Smoke Alert ~ June 3rd

Next Saturday, June 3rd, there may be some smoke emanating from behind Telegraph Harbour Marina from noon to about 6pm.  A commercial pig-roaster will be on site for a private event and the Telegraph Harbour Marina owners and the chef will be taking extra safety precautions to ensure no sparks or embers will escape. The Fire Dept. will be monitoring. Any other daytime smoke sightings should be called in to 911 for Fire Dept. investigation.

Small, evening campfires are still being permitted and Campfire Permits can be obtained on-line at www.thetisislandfire.ca .  We urge you to consider purchasing an approved propane campfire appliance which you can enjoy during complete fire bans here and in Provincial Parks...they can be shut off immediately, give no smoke, sparks, embers or ash to deal with, and you can burn your marshmallows over a propane campfire just as easily as over a wood fire.

Fire Reminder

A reminder that all residential burning (yard waste, incinerators etc) is now over for the season. Evening Campfires with permits are still allowed. Please remember to follow all campfire regulations for size and extinguishment. Following the latest May weekend, the Fire Dept. had to attend to an abandoned beach fire that had smouldered and reignited during the high winds.

Please be very cautious as we dry out and heat up. Call in daytime smoke sightings to 911.

Wells and Groundwater Education Workshop ~ Islands Trust ~ June 9th

The Islands Trust is co-ordinating a series of wells and groundwater education workshops on 11 islands this spring and summer in partnership with the Ministry of Forest, Lands and Natural Resource Operations (FLNRO), and the Vancouver Island and Vancouver Coastal health authorities.  The Thetis Island workshop is scheduled for June 9th, from 10am-12:30pm at the Thetis Island Community Centre.

Workshop Details

The workshops will consist of an introduction to the Islands Trust, a FLNRO presentation on groundwater and well protection, and a health authority (Island Health or Vancouver Coastal Heath) presentation on water quality and well water testing, followed by a question and answer period. The Islands Trust arranged for a local laboratory, Maxxam Analytics, to provide water testing kits that will be available for pick up at the workshops. Maxxam Analytics will provide a 10% discount on select well water testing for workshop participants. In addition, the Environmental Operators Certificate Program will offer Continuing Education Units to Certified Operators who attend these workshops. Lastly, educational materials on water conservation will be distributed at the workshops.

We look forward to seeing you there.

CVRD Educational Workshop ~ Yard Debris, Burning & Air Quality

The CVRD will host an educational workshop for Thetis Islanders on managing yard debris, burning and air quality on Thursday June 15th from 7 PM to 8:45 PM at Forbes Hall.

This is a follow up to CVRD Area G Director Mel Dorey's visit to Thetis on April 18th, where he spoke as a delegate to the Islands Trust Meeting about the proposed Area G Burning Bylaw (which may or may not include Thetis island). As the local trust meeting was not the forum for a full discussion Mel committed to having a general meeting on Thetis sponsored by the CVRD to discuss the issues more fully with CVRD experts in attendance.

The purpose of the workshop is:

* Primarily educational

* To review air quality data and impacts

* To discuss tools for improving air quality and managing yard debris

The agenda for the evening will be:

Welcome:   Keith Rush, Thetis Island Improvement District

Introductions, Meeting/Background/Purpose:   Mel Dorey, CVRD Area G Director

Air Quality and Health:   Dr. Paul Hasselback, Island Health

Air Quality Monitoring:   Earle Plain, Ministry of Environment

Cowichan's Regional:   Keith Lawrence, CVRD

Airshed Protection Strategy/Yard and Garden Debris Management:  Tauseef Waraich, CVRD

Questions/Comments:   All
