Anchorages Concern Thetis

As you remember, we presented our group (ACT (Anchorages Concern Thetis)) on August 8th in the community centre. By the same occasion we asked you for help to support our cause by writing a personal letter to a provincial or federal politician. Now, as the uncontrolled anchoring around Thetis Island increases again in these winter months, we would like to review the past activities. For this we would appreciate that those of you who did write a letter according to our recommendations inform us by a short email.

The best address to use is the info@acthetis.com  (you can reach it from our website - www.acthetis.com ) or you can write directly.

For those of you who intended to write such a letter and did not yet do it  for various reasons we have added, to facilitate your work, to our website the necessary address information. You can find it at:

www.acthetis.com   -> more -> how to communicate.

Please consider submitting a letter to support our cause.

Thank you very much for helping us!

for ACT.

Winter Solstice ~ Pre-Celebration

A simple but splendid pre-celebration of the winter solstice is being organized for Wed, Dec 20th at Forbes Hall. Everyone of any age is welcome!

Dressing up in sparkly, winged or other light-hearted attire with the intention to bring a bit of joy to others is optional but encouraged (extra wings will be available at the door!). Light refreshments will be provided so any contributions of treats will be appreciated.

The evening will include a participatory percussion circle facilitated by Tatiana Nemchin and Joel Delaquis (http://studiomouvement.com/), as well as open contributions of stories, poems, songs or other inspirations by anyone who feels moved to share. Come and warm yourselves with this community midwinter celebration! Doors open 7 pm. Percussion circle begins about 7:30 pm.

Christmas Concert ~ Thanks

Thank you everyone for your wonderful reception of "Santa In Space" last Thursday.  In order to give proper credit for our performance, I would like to mention a couple of names I missed in my introduction.  The character of Fred the Alien was an invention of Matthias Bannister, who kindly allowed us to use it in our play.  Special thanks to Micah Galbraith for his crucial contribution to shaping our sound effects. I also want to give Simone Luckham the thanks she deserves for her ideas, her patience, and perseverance in getting this play ready.  Of course, the biggest thanks goes to the students for their wonderful performance.

Home to Rent or Purchase

The day has finally come for me to begin my search for our new home on Thetis Island. My house in Chemainus has sold and we are willing to look at a variety of options, with the end goal being to live full time on the Island.

To start we are open to a short-term rental up to a year, housesitting (references available), purchase of smaller raw land acreage, purchase of acreage with cabin and room to build main home or just a simple purchase of a smallish home.

Price would be based on what is being offered, open to either private sale or agent listed. I have lived in remote northern communities and I am comfortable with living a rustic, environmentally sensitive lifestyle with community unity an important part of daily life.

Please contact me with any information you may have. My cell is 250-533-9347 call or text. Email is elite01@shaw.ca

Woofer Seeks Work

I have traveled the not so far distance from Prince George, BC to live and work on Thetis Island for the months of December and January. I am woofing for Elisabeth and Noah Bond at Jollity farm and during my downtime, on the weekends, I am seeking casual work to gain some income during my stay. I am flexible in terms of the type of work and appreciative of anything that can come my way. I have skill sets, that are by no means professional, in general labour, farming, landscaping, and painting, along with administrative and computer work experience. If at all applicable, my education and work experience is in community and population health, food and customer service, and arts and culture organizational programming and operation.

In gratitude,

Roanne Whitticase

Ladies' Night 2017

On the evening of December 9th, over 70 women gathered at Forbes Hall to celebrate the season.  There was a delectable (& massive) assortment of nibbles & desserts, with punch and wine to wet our whistles.  We sang, we laughed & stories were told.

Special thanks to Gloria, Helen, Dee, Ruth, Lynn, Vicki, Natasha, Cecilia, & Sue for keeping things beautiful, organized, and all done & dusted at the end.

Thanks also to Kaz Bannister, Leah May Howard, Crimson McClellan, & Joey Knowles for keeping the food & kitchen organized.

During the event, Lynn Hunter presented Vicki Walker with the Candlestick Award for all her years of volunteering within our community.  Congratulations, Vicki!

Besides the party, we also held a Shelter Drive for Somenos House, finishing up the night with 8 new laundry baskets full of necessities, as well as several bags & boxes.  My car was overflowing with gifts when I arrived at Cowichan Women Against Violence offices in Duncan.  The staff was THRILLED ~ “Christmas has arrived!” one was heard saying.

There was also a donation box for CWAV.  When asking CWAV for a list for the Shelter Drive, I asked if there was any one big-ticket item that was needed for the shelter.  They desperately need a new stove and range-hood for Somenos House.  Well, our dear little island raised $1,565 for CWAV.  One staff member told me, that with their purchasing network, this would certainly buy them what they needed, with lots of funds for other necessities remaining.

So, thank you, Ladies, for having a good time, and giving from your hearts.  You have made a huge difference this winter!

Sing on,

Ann Dickie
