Special Notice from TIVFD

We are now heading into the thick of wildfire hazard season.

We are now in HIGH hazard again and all activities that can produce sparks must be monitored closely.  Those with existing Campfire Permits dated until Sunday, July 15th are urged to be extremely careful with their sparks and embers.  After Sunday, July 15th there will be NO campfire permits issued until further notice.  Please switch over to your UL or CSA certified propane campfire appliance.

We are going to be in EXTREME HAZARD conditions very quickly, which means you have very little time to get your mowing, chainsawing etc. finished.  Please consider getting those chores done in the next few days.  When EXTREME HAZARD is posted, those spark producing activities must cease.

For a complete information on the Thetis Island Improvement District By-Law 70 (Extreme Fire Hazard Conditions) go to

http://www.thetisislandfire.ca/tiid/bylaws/TIID_Bylaw_70_Extreme_Fire_Hazard_2017.pdf

Several bush fires have been ignited this past week in the Cowichan Valley by human activity, and the heat and drying winds are quickly pushing Thetis Island to tinder dry conditions. Please be vigilant.

Thank you for your fire safety support.

Outdoor Play Area ~ Items Needed

First I want to thank every single person that encouraged me to not give up on my search to find a home on Thetis. We bought a little home and are now permanent residents of this wonderful community. The church members were so helpful with moral support, prayer and physically helping us move. My little girl and I are so fortunate to be able to call so many people our new friends.

I am creating an outdoor space for her in our new yard and would love to buy what I need from my neighbors.

-succulents and small shrubs for a toddler garden (need to be durable)

-4 wood pallets to create a climbing structure

-very small wood boat, does not have to be water worthy

-large wood dowelling or wooden curtain rods (short is fine)

-Pulley system for a clothes line( with or without line)

-left over chalkboard paint

-1/2 sheet G1S plywood (for a chalkboard)

-white irrigation piping and random fittings (makes for great car tunnels)

-wood to build a 4x8 sandbox (pressure treated)

-decking boards, 4x4 posts (for a swing)

-large wooden box (toy storage)

-landscape fabric

-short 4' ish 4x4 for use as balance beams

-decking screws, nails

-water hose

-sand

-Anything you might have that you think would be great in an nature focused, environmentally conscious, budget friendly play area. I have given myself two weeks to complete this project so I would like to purchase the items asap to allow for proper planning.

If you are thinking this sounds like it will be a fun place to play, just say Hi to my little girl one day and I'm sure she will invite you over to play.

I'm happy to pay, also free is Ok.

Join: Community Bat Count ~ Part 2

Join the Bat Count between July 11 and August 5 and contribute to the monitoring  of bat populations in BC.

With the occurrence of White-nose Syndrome in North America, monitoring bat colonies is more important than ever. All you need is a known bat roosting site (e.g., your attic, a bat box, an unoccupied building), a pen and paper. Counting once or twice during the bat count dates is all that's needed.

Here's how. It's fun and simple (glass of wine or beer while counting is optional):

  • Arrive at your bat roost at sunset (bats will begin to emerge at dusk).
  • The air temperature should be at least 12 deg (C) with low wind speed.
  • Sit or stand outside so that the bats' exit point is visible from a comfortable distance. More than one person might be needed if bats are exiting from multiple points.
  • Tally the bats as they fly out for their nightly insect-eating. A hand clicker can help.
  • Record your observations on the data sheet (available at www.bcbats.ca/attachments/BCBatCountdataform2017.pdf ).
  • Mail  your data sheet to the BC Community Bat Program at the end of the summer.

Do not enter bat roosts or handle the animals.

Please respect private property. Ask permission if the bat roost is on someone else's land.

The Annual Bat Count and the BC Community Bat Program (bcbats.ca) are funded by the Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation and the Forest Enhancement Society of BC.

For more information go to www.bcbats.ca or contact ThINC@thetisisland.net

Mission Road Congestion

Mission Road is now congested with trucks and construction crew vehicles due to the Fire Hall expansion project.

If you will be using the Lawrence Spring Trail or the Community Trail at the head of Mission Road, please note that there is no public parking past the Forbes Hall exit driveway.  '

Park your vehicle at Forbes Hall and start your walk there. There is a short-cut behind the tennis court with steps to Mission Road.

Be very careful when walking past the construction site while equipment is operating. Possibly adding to the chaos will be Fire Dept. members rushing to the hall when our emergency pagers go off.

Thank you for your understanding.

What's the Buzzzzzz?

Whats the buzz? Pollinators are in trouble, but you can help!

On Saturday July 14 Lora Morandin of Pollinator Partnership Canada and The Island Pollinator Initiative will be doing a workshop. We will explore the WHO and What of bees and Why it is important to protect and restore native bee populations.

The workshop starts at 11am at the Nature House at the Portal. We will be doing some class room learning followed by on site observation and identification.

Bring a bagged lunch, water, sunscreen and a hat. And there is more!

For those interested, later in the day, we will be making handmade seed paper using recycled paper and native flower seeds our pollinators love. Workshops are offered to everyone in the community. Members of the Nature House are free otherwise a donation is appreciated.
