We will be delving into the world of seaweeds and algae, highlighting their importance through various activities, demonstrations and crafts!

August 19

·        Butterflies & Bugs: 1-4PM

Don't know a swallowtail from a skipper?  A dasher from a darner?  Join biologist Patrick Lilley as he leads a walk through the forests and fields around the Portal in search of Thetis Island's largest and most colourful insects, the butterflies and dragonflies.  He'll talk about some of butterfly and dragonfly species found on Thetis, their life cycles, and their habitat needs.  Together, you'll learn how to catch, handle, and identify some of them.  Patrick will also talk about how you can improve habitat for butterflies and dragonflies on your property and why you might want to do so.  He'll also introduce some of the great resources out there for those who want to learn more.  Bring your butterfly net, a pair of binoculars, and a field guide if you have them!  (Don't worry if you don't---he'll bring some to share too.) We’ll start the afternoon with insect themed-crafts, and then begin the insect walk at 2PM!

August 20

·        Ocean Conservation and Beach Seine: 10-1PM

Join us for our second low tide day of the summer! This time we will include the theme of ocean conservation, with talks, demonstrations, and activities regarding the protection of our local waters. As well, we will be doing a low tide beach seine! Beach seines use a special net to catch all of the intertidal species which we can inspect on shore!

Saturday Fair

This Saturday we have two new people with us.

Cecilia Inness joins us with her creative cards. These cards are one of a kind and never been sold on the island before, so we are delighted that Cecilia said yes.

Susy is from Peru and not only sells crafts but this week will be selling her amazing decorated cakes.

Check out the daffodil bulbs ready to be planted in October.

Only three more Saturdays left before we close for the year so now is the time to come and see us.

Nearby Fire

The Municipality of North Cowichan says a quick response stopped a brush fire from threatening nearby houses and the Cowichan Garry Oak Preserve Wednesday night.

Twenty-five firefighters from North Cowichan’s South End Fire Hall, the Maple Bay Fire Hall and the Duncan Fire Hall fought the fire, which was reported at 11:35 p.m. The municipality said the fire was believed to be human-caused and severely dry conditions cause the fire to quickly grow to half an acre. Firefighters battled the blaze for two-and-a-half hours before it was fully extinguished.

“We’re thankful for the very quick call to 911 by a resident,” Mike Dunn, fire chief of the Maple Bay Fire Hall, said in a statement. “That combined with the rapid response by the Fire Halls kept the fire from having devastating results.”

“That combined with the rapid response by the Fire Halls kept the fire from having devastating results.”

There is a campfire ban for the Coastal Fire Centre, with the exception of the Haida Gwaii and the “Fog Zone,” that will remain in place until Oct. 21 or until the public is otherwise notified.
