Thetis Island Community Meeting: Sunday 22nd at 2 pm

Hosted by CVRD Area G Director Jesse McClinton

I'm hosting a Community Meeting this Sunday, September 22nd, at 2 p.m. at the Forbes Hall Community Centre, Thetis Island. The meeting is open to all Thetis Island and Area G residents. I'll review what we've been up to for the last two years. This informal setting will have plenty of time for questions and answers.

Agenda:

  • What is the purpose of the CVRD, and where does its authority come from?
  • The role of Improvement Districts and Islands Trust relating to the CVRD
  • The difference between Regional, Sub-Regional and Local services within the CVRD
  • How Thetis Island fits in with the rest of Area G (e.g. Saltair, Penelakut, Ruxton, etc.)
  • Regional Recreation
  • Thetis Island Community Dock
  • Grants
  • Recycling
  • Public Transportation
  • Working with Thetis Island Community Groups
  • Advocacy (e.g. high-speed internet)
  • Q & A

If there is any other topic or issue that you would like me to address, please don't hesitate to let me know in advance, and I will do my best to work it into my update.

You don't need to RSVP, but it would be helpful if you replied to this email so we can understand the numbers: AreaG@jessemcclinton.com

If you still need to read my updates, I encourage you to do so to understand better the work that has taken place (https://jessemcclinton.com/blog).

Please share this with your family, neighbours, and friends. I hope you can attend.

Review of "Muddy Waters"

The Thetis Island Library has a copy of the new book by Sooke author, Al Tysick, entitled Muddy Water—Stories from the Street, edited by part-time Thetis resident, Connie Foss More. Bruce More is also on "Rev. Al's" support team, mostly doing computer-based projects like creating this website that will tell you more about the book:
https://muddywaterbook.ca/

Here's a link to a BC Booklook review: https://bcbooklook.com/rev-al-tysicks-new-book/

We hope that Thetis folks read these unique and engaging portrayals of individuals dealing with homelessness, poverty, addiction, mental illness, and other issues on the streets of Victoria, BC.

Yard Waste & Machine Piles

Category 2 (yard waste piles and burn barrels) and Category 3 (machine piles) open burning will be permitted on Thetis Island starting October 1st with a fire permit in place.

Category 3 fires must also be registered with the province and given a registration number before applying for the TIVFD Fire Permit.

Our dedicated Fire Permits manager, Veronica Shelford, will be back from holiday by the end of September and will be able to issue the permits for the month of October. Permits will be required until October 31st.

Also, the Ministry of Environment requires all persons to check the Venting Index for smoke control and cannot ignite the pile if the Venting index is not “Good”.

Ferry Traffic: Capernwray Students

Capernwray Harbour Bible Centre will be welcoming approximately 80 students on Friday, September 20, 2024

Students along with their family members will be travelling to Thetis (from Chemainus) beginning with the 8:20am ferry through the 4:05pm ferry.

We are excited to begin this new year with so many students and wanted to make sure our community was aware and informed of how this may affect ferry travel.

Starting Sunday, 29 September, our students will be travelling to Chemainus each Sunday to attend local churches. They will usually be on the 7:55am ferry or the 9:10am ferry.

Thank you for your kind understanding and please feel free to reach out to our Main Office if you have any questions.

Review of “Voices for the Islands”

Author Sheila Harrington from Lasqueti Island sailed to Thetis in August to launch her great non-fiction book, Voices for the Islands: Thirty Years of Nature Conservation on the Salish Sea.

Have a look at BC BookLook's review by Caroline Woodward. https://bcbooklook.com/island-in-the-sun/

Our community efforts on Thetis are mentioned several times and form a chapter in the book. Copies of the book are available at the Telegraph Harbour Marina.

Short Documentary about Anaïs’ Artwork

Hello everyone,

A 9-minute documentary about my art was just released by WebOuest, an online francophone TV. I thought I would let the island know considering how central to my work Thetis is. I hope you enjoy it!

Here is the link to a version with English subtitles - just make sure to enable closed captions:
