Nearby Fire

The Municipality of North Cowichan says a quick response stopped a brush fire from threatening nearby houses and the Cowichan Garry Oak Preserve Wednesday night.

Twenty-five firefighters from North Cowichan’s South End Fire Hall, the Maple Bay Fire Hall and the Duncan Fire Hall fought the fire, which was reported at 11:35 p.m. The municipality said the fire was believed to be human-caused and severely dry conditions cause the fire to quickly grow to half an acre. Firefighters battled the blaze for two-and-a-half hours before it was fully extinguished.

“We’re thankful for the very quick call to 911 by a resident,” Mike Dunn, fire chief of the Maple Bay Fire Hall, said in a statement. “That combined with the rapid response by the Fire Halls kept the fire from having devastating results.”

“That combined with the rapid response by the Fire Halls kept the fire from having devastating results.”

There is a campfire ban for the Coastal Fire Centre, with the exception of the Haida Gwaii and the “Fog Zone,” that will remain in place until Oct. 21 or until the public is otherwise notified.

Exercise Class

After a much needed rest I will be back to leading a class of exercise that includes cardio, balance, strength, stretching and laughter. This class is twice a week on Monday and Friday mornings from 9:15 to 10.  I have been teaching this class for 5 years now and have seen great improvements in everyone that attends. We welcome anyone interested in improving their life so that you can be more active for a long time to come.

Give me a call or email me if you have any questions. First class starts Monday August 21st.

Thanks

Stray Cat Spotted?

A rather thin, orange and white cat with only a stub of a tail wandered across our deck early this morning.  He or she (but looks male somehow) was definitely just moving through (heading north) but in case someone has lost him, this is just to say he's been seen in this area.

Fire Weather Update... No Campfires

Thank you all for your continued vigilance for wildfire hazards.  We will continue allowing “Early Shift High Risk Activities” for the next three days…Friday will be the last day for High Risk Activities.   We have moved back to EXTREME with the other nearby areas) for now, and there is still the outdoor fire ban in place Provincially.  NO CAMPFIRES.

Here is our fire weather for Tuesday onwards:  "Bands of moisture entrained in a fairly stable north-westerly flow aloft should maintain cooler and cloudier conditions across the northern half of the region today with progressively warmer, drier and sunnier conditions to the south. Light inflow winds should support good overnight recoveries again tonight in all areas & elevations. A flat upper ridge should drift onshore on Wednesday brining a general trend towards slightly warmer, drier, and sunnier conditions to all zones. Temperatures in the inland valleys of the Island and Mainland should hover in the mid to potentially upper twenties across the south with humidity on the Island dipping slightly below 30% in spots

6 TO 10 DAY: An upper ridge should support between two and four drying days starting Sunday with temperatures hovering near or slightly above seasonal normals (low to mid twenties), light inflow winds, and not overly low humidities (above 25%). The next upper trough and associated frontal system should arrive near the middle of next week (Aug 22-ish) bringing increasing winds, showers, and possible thundershowers (showers generally more widespread across the north and spottier across the south).

Good overnight recoveries means that Early Shift activities should be safe, but please maintain the two-hour fire watch and have extinguishment capabilities handy, as required by the Wildfire Act, after chain-sawing, mowing, milling, chipping, excavating etc. This late in the season any humidity approaching 30% or lower means explosive fire behaviour so we are not out of the woods yet, so to speak.  And a BIG thank-you to the persons who are cautioning cigarette smokers on our roads to be fire safety conscious…you know who you are and we very much appreciate your pro-active efforts in keeping us all safe.

Ride to Conquer Cancer ~ Seeking Donations

This is my first year participating in the Ride to Conquer Cancer, a 260 km, 2 day ride that spans from Vancouver to Seattle, that raises money for the BC Cancer foundation. I was motivated to join my team, To The Max Cycling Club, after 2 of my close cycling friends told me about the experiences with the Ride since 2009. To The Max is a team based out of Vancouver with over 50 participants, who have combined raised almost $80,000 this year with an end goal of $100,000.

Cancer will affect every one of us in our lifetime, whether directly or indirectly with a close friend or loved one. In order to participate, I must raise $2500, with an overall goal of $3200, with every penny of these fundraising efforts donated to the BC Cancer foundation. My chosen field is skin cancer and dermatology as I am considered a high risk for melanoma in my lifetime. As the effects of the sun have taken their toll on my skin over the years I now understand the importance of education, early warning signs, and prevention of skin cancer.

Thank you so much for your support,

Fire Hazard Rating "HIGH" ~ Fire Ban Still in Place

Due to the bit of moisture and cooler temperatures the Fire Hazard rating has dropped to HIGH Hazard today and should hold until at least Wednesday. NO FIRES -COMPLETE FIRE BAN ENDURES. HIGH Risk Activities such as mowing, chain-sawing etc. may take place in the morning hours (when humidity is highest) with safety precautions (water/extinguisher ready) in place and must be followed by a 2-hour fire watch after activity ceases at 11 a.m.
