12 More Days for Burchell Hill Matching Funds Campaign

Huge kudos to all those who have pledged to support the Burchell Hill Nature Reserve Matching Funds Campaign. Thanks to you, we're getting close to our $50,000 goal by June 1, but we still have  $16,800 to go. Time is running out. Meet the challenge from the anonymous donor who will match your pledge dollar for dollar. Make a pledge today by emailing us at ThINC@thetisisland.net, by contacting Ann at 250-246-8176 or by downloading a pledge form from www.thetisislandnatureconservancy.org.

Thank you from the Thetis Island Nature Conservancy

New Name for Proposed Nature Reserve

Brilliant pink Fairyslipper orchids (Calypso bulbosa) have been blooming in profusion along the trails on Burchell Hill this spring. In their honor, ThINC has incorporated them into the name for the proposed Nature Reserve. Watch for references to the proposed 'Fairyslipper Forest Nature Reserve on Burchell Hill.' And take a walk to see them before they are gone. No picking please, these orchids are delicate.

The Thetis Show ~ Call to Artists

WHAT: A summer exhibition of artwork by Thetis artists.

WHEN: July & August 2015.

WHERE: “The White House” on the Askew/Squire property (lot 62).

WHO: You can apply if you are age 16 and above. You can be a full-time, part-time, future or former Thetis resident. You don't need to have art education. You don't need to be a professional artist. Your work may or may not be for sale. You can submit work in any 2D or 3D medium: photography, painting, drawing, printmaking, collage, ceramics, metalwork, jewelry, woodwork, sculpture, textile, mixed media... If you have original artwork which you are proud of and would like to show, submit it!

WHY: We feel that there is a rich, but hidden, pool of talent on the island, and we are willing to create an event to reveal it. We want Thetis artists to get to know each other, and the island to get to know its artists. We deliberately chose to make this show open to all as we believe that the island is too small to be divided over what is art and what isn't. We trust that all participants willing to share their artwork believe in its quality and take pride in it: it is this diverse, alive Thetis creativity we want to show. We also know that a wide range of work will attract a larger audience. We believe that the Thetis Show will contribute to making Thetis an even more vibrant, living community.

HOW TO APPLY: Send an email to thethetisshow@gmail.com by June 3rd, 2015. Please include the following in your email:

Your name and contact details

Pictures of 3 pieces you would like to show (in JPEG, max 1MB per picture, file name must be titleofpiece.jpg)

Title, medium, size and price of each piece (if not for sale, indicate “NFS”)

A 100-word text introducing yourself, your art and your relationship to Thetis Island, which will be displayed next to your piece(s) in the show.

After this date, a meeting will be held with all responding artists where information will be given on the next steps.

ABOUT US: The Thetis Show is an initiative of Anaïs Gerber (facebook.com/anaisgerberart) and Carolyn Askew.

ABOUT THE WHITE HOUSE:  “The White House” is a beautiful old cottage on the Askew/Squire property. It is very bright, with a good amount of wall space, as well as deck & garden space. We believe it is an ideal venue for the Thetis Show thanks to its charming character and excellent location.

ABOUT THE SHOW: Depending on the number of participants and size of the pieces, we can't guarantee that all artists will be able to display all their 3 pieces, especially if the artwork is very large.

Our priority will be on ensuring that every artist willing to participate gets to display at least one piece, and on curating a visually pleasant show.

Artists will be responsible to bring their artwork to the White House a few days before the show, and to take it down once the show is over.

Artists are required to frame any 2D work which could easily be damaged (drawings, watercolours...).

Exhibition opening days and hours will be decided between participating artists & residents of the Askew/Squire property. Artists will be expected to attend the White House during agreed opening hours, according to a rotation schedule agreed upon with all participating artists. This should mean a few hours every week for each of us. Attendance during opening hours will involve giving information to visitors and taking payment from any sales.

The Thetis Show is not responsible for any damage or loss of artwork. The Thetis Show will not take any commission on sales, but will require a small contribution from participating artists towards flyers printing costs, display/hanging expenses, opening night costs, cleaning of the White House after the show, and other associated costs.

TIMA ~ The Big Event ~ Burgers, Ballads, and Beer

Dear Friends:

Here's the latest marine report. Entertainment storm approaching. Please mark it on your calendar and come prepared, with or without life-jackets.

Cheers,

Gary Geddes

Burgers, Ballads and Beer (aka an evening of nautical tunes and tales)

Thetis Island Marina

Friday, May 29th ~ 7:30PM

Join the TIMA crew and sundry salty types for a hilarious soirée of nautical music and unshipshape anecdotes about life, laughter and folly on the briny deep, shared by the sly, the shy, the outgoing and the outrageous.

Here are the names of a few folks who’ve hinted, threatened, agreed heartily or are currently being coerced (as in keel-hauled) to play music and/or give you a 5-minute or so account of some humorous or humiliating adventure on high seas, low tides or impertinent reefs: Lynda Poirier, Darron Stepple, Simone Luckham, Dave Pethick, Petra Accipiter, Maureen Loiselle, Mike Ferguson, Gerhard Wanney, Tom Taylor, Bob Pickell, Vicki Walker Gerry Smith, Hortenza Nawatzki, Wayne Loiselle, Dale Burkholder, Michel Filion, Gary Geddes, Freya Fullner, and that’s just for starters.

Peter Luckham has agreed to act as MC, be witty, and use the boat-hook when necessary.

If I’ve missed your name or if you have a 5-minute anecdote and would love to be included, let me know by phone or email. No audition required. Or just show up at the soirée and volunteer to be part of the open mike at our floating opera. Tell Peter you want to share a story.

Also, if you know a Thetis Island stowaway with a tale that must be told, bully him or her to share that story. And let me know and I’ll help arrange to have this secret sharer Shanghaied (240-246-8176; gedworks@islandnet.com).

Lots of folks will be arriving early for dinner. If you can’t make it for dinner, come up the gangplank in time to find a seat for the 7:30 launch. If the weather’s good, we may have our event outdoors in the covered area.

Special dinner price offered by Paul Deacon...burger and beer $15.00

Parts of Ship: Itinerary for TIMA’S Floating Opera

Reminder ~ Special TIRRA Community Meeting: Mosquito Issues on Thetis Island

Date: Saturday, May 30th, 2015

Time: 3:00-5:00 PM

Location: Community Hall

TIRRA has been working on a mosquito mitigation strategy since the nuisance issue was raised last fall.

For TIRRA to proceed further, we need your approval to develop a Pest Management Plan (PMP) through the Ministry of Environment.
Please click here to read the online reports prior to 30th May as we just won't have time to review during the meeting.

We hope there will be a good turn out, especially of those residents who are deeply affected by the mosquito problems.

NOTE: After a question/answer period, TIRRA Executive will be proposing an option. The motion could be as simple as:

"Moved that TIRRA Executive develop a Pest Management Plan"
