Local History Book for Sale

20th Anniversary Edition!

The Lives Behind the Headstones:
Glimpses into the history of Thetis Island
through the lives of the people buried
in St. Margaret’s Cemetery

Compiled and edited by Sheila Kelsey, first published in 1993,
this little island classic continues to be a favourite gift and keepsake
for Thetis Island residents and visitors alike. This compilation of life
stories of the early settlers on Thetis Island was created by Sheila to
help “keep alive the memories of all these people who form part of the
fabric of our island’s history.”

Copies are available for purchase locally at the Capernwray Pump House
Gift Shop, Thetis Island Marina Post Office and Telegraph Harbour Marina
Bistro Café, and also in Duncan at Copycat Printing & Design Ltd.

Proceeds from sales of this book go to St. Margaret’s Cemetery to help
provide for its upkeep. The St. Margaret’s Cemetery Board thanks you for
your support.

Ride to Victoria Needed

My name is Anais and I'm currently staying at Jollity Farm with Elisabeth and Noah. I am going down to Victoria for the weekend and I was wondering whether there was anyone on the island who was also heading thereon Saturday (August 3rd) and could give me a ride?

Thanks a lot in advance!

A Fire Reminder

Please remember that despite what the store clerk tells you, fire bowls and tiki lamps are NOT okay during a complete fire ban.  Fire bowls burn wood and give out sparks, even with a grate over the campfire.  Tiki lights have been known to blow over and ignite serious fires during fire season.  And of course, no fireworks or other incendiary devices...this includes sky or wedding lanterns which normally are a can of sterno or diesel fuel or even a candle that is attached to a paper lantern that will lift into the sky with the hot air produced.  Lovely to look at up in the sky, but when they come down...disaster.

Although most Thetis Islanders are aware of these restrictions, some visitors are not and don't notice the information signs.  Wednesday evening a concerned resident reported seeing flames and hearing crackling at a location on the harbour.  The fire dept. responded and found it was an uninformed part-time resident having a campfire on his deck.  We assisted the person in extinguishing the flames and explained the fire ban.  We thank that caller for reporting his concerns to  911.
Please be vigilant...your fire department would rather respond to a minor call than a major conflagration!

Coastal Fire Ban

There is a Coastal Fire Ban on all fire INCLUDING campfires except in the "fog zones" marked purple (Ucluelet/Tofino etc.) starting at noon on Thursday August 1st.

Here on Thetis Island, the complete fire ban INCLUDING campfires continues, and we ask that you report any smoke sightings to 911.

Book Donations

Hi everyone...I thank everyone for donating books to the library sale.

I should have mentioned that some books are not useful to us.  These
would be old school books, books in poor condition, and magazines.

There is a book bin at Byng's Creek that any of your old reading
materials can go into.  There is an organization that takes all of the
books from there, sorts them, and redistributes them.  It's a great
way to deal with them and it is where remaindered books from the sale
will be going.

Thanks,

Sandy Alexandre

Missing Book

H.M.S. ULYSSES BY ALISTAIR MCLEAN

A few weeks ago we ordered a book from Amazon which, despite a very thorough search of the house, has gone missing.  I suspect I scooped it up with the library books and left it with the book returns.  We’d very much like to get it back.  If you have picked it up from our local library please let me know.

Thanks, Cecilia  250-246-3013

Facebook Friends Request Warning

I thought some of you might appreciate a warning, I have noted recently that there are some very nice looking scam facebook requests being emailed lately. These requests look like the real thing, but are not. The email address looks right, the logos everything.
But they are fake, you can determine if a request is fake or not by hovering your mouse over any of the icons or buttons (never click) and this will display a web address on the status line of your browser that will show you the address to where you will be directed if you clicked it, this is often some server in russia or asia, but significantly not a facebook address. Beware never click on a friend request you do not know.
It is best to go directly to face book and see if you have friend request there, never by email.

Happy facebooking !

Library Book & Bake Sale

Next Saturday is our big annual Library Book and Bake sale.  The money
realized at the sale is the only fund for library purchases through
the year.

Every year Islanders bake goodies for the sale and they
have always been eagerly snapped up by shoppers at the sale.  There is
one week for bakers to think about what they would like to make and
bring to the Hall to help make the sale the success it has always
been.

Please drop baked goods off at the Hall, Saturday August 3rd, after 8AM.

Thank you for your continued generosity.  And see you there.

Sandy Alexandre
