Yoga Coming!

I have had a lot of interest in starting up yoga again.  After a very busy summer, I am going to have some down time in the first part of September, and then I will start up in the 3rd week of September.  There will be some different offerings this year and some different pricing options.  I will forward more information next week.  I am going to ask for 6-week commitments from you and I will need 5-6 people per class before they will run this year.

So most yoga classes will start the week of Sept 23rd and I will be contacting all my past yoga students to let them know their current balance and ask for their input on desired classes.

I look forward to seeing you all in a couple of weeks.

Warmly, Dawn Gordon

New Comment Regarding: Further Clarification for Garbage/Recycle Parcel Tax ~ T. French

I too find it frustrating that those who are the most outspoken opponents of  the  garbage / recycling programme seldom become involved in the volunteer side  of the community and have no idea how may people give time to make the system work. Thetis has been functioning very well with volunteer supported services. The Fire Dept. for one is operational at a low cost to the taxpayer because of the dedication and sacrifice of volunteers who respond to calls for less than the cost of a package of cigarettes or a beer at the pub. The message from the few who find it unacceptable to pay for garbage / recycling  will not destroy the spirit of the folks who really own this island with their commitment to community.  The folks who make this community work so economically are the volunteers,  don't bite the hand that feeds you!

Further Clarification For Garbage/Recycle Parcel Tax

From TIRRA

In order for Thetis to manage her own solid waste, an organisation of some kind is necessary.  TIRRA has been doing it for decades.  The only other reasonable option is for CVRD to do it for us.  This would leave Thetis with very little say in how our solid waste is collected or how much it might cost.

On May 11th TIRRA hosted an advertised special meeting to discuss and present information about our solid waste system and to discuss raising the budget cap.  The end result was a vote to raise the cap to a maximum of $283 per parcel.  The tentative 2014 budget would be in the range of $160-180 (to be set at the Oct 24th general meeting) which seems to me to be most reasonable for the service provided considering the majority of TIRRA members VOLUNTARILY paid $150 for the 2011 year.

As a nearby example in Chemainus, Ken and Jan pay $236 for their garbage recycle pick up.  This is for ONE can every OTHER week with a weight limit of 35 pounds, put out at the end of the driveway.  Anything else they may want to dispose of has to be taken to Bings Creek or Peerless Rd.  The recycle/compost is picked up alternate weeks.  It would seem reasonable that CVRD would have to charge more for coming to Thetis.  If TIRRA is unable to secure funds to operate our system, I see no other alternative but to turn it over to CVRD.  Truly, the choice is yours.

You may be considering, (or someone may be trying to convince you), to vote against bylaw 3713 (which is the five year cap on what TIRRA is allowed to budget for).  If a negative vote on this Alternate Approval Process forces a referendum, it typically costs about $15,000 to host a referendum when there is no scheduled election taking place.

If you have already voted against the bylaw and wish to retract your negative vote, please contact Kathleen Harrison at CVRD (250-746-2500) or e-mail, kharrison@cvrd.bc.ca. before September 17th.

I wonder why we would want to pay CVRD more money than it costs to do it ourselves and get a reduced service in return??  If you are in favour of bylaw 3713 and the Thetis recycle system, you don’t need to cast a vote at this time.

Questions??
