Anaïs' Bread

Hello everyone,

I wanted to thank you all for showing such enthusiasm for my home baked sourdough bread – I am very happy to be able to share this passion of mine with my fellow islanders.

I am now baking to order three times a week: on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

Your choice of breads:

- French country loaf: $4.00 (white & rye flours)

- Cowichan red loaf: $4.50 (a red wheat grown in Duncan & rye flour)

- Poppy seed braid: $5.00 (white & rye flours, braided with poppy seed and rock salt)

All breads are made using flours from organically grown grain.

To order, give me a call or send me an email: 250-246-1292 or anais.gerber@tarao.org. Pick up on Sunrise Point Rd.

You can also find my bread at the Sunday market this summer (however quantities are limited there and I sell out very fast!).

See you soon,

Anaïs

ThINC ~ Lower Burchell Hill Nature Reserve Project

Thank you to everyone who came out on a hot sunny summer afternoon for our July 12 information meeting about the Lower Burchell Hill Nature Reserve Project.

We're very excited about the prospect of creating Thetis Island's first community nature reserve. We've worked hard over the last 2 years to negotiate a fair agreement for purchase and are already moving forward with our fundraising plans. We'll report regularly to the community on our progress through e-spokes, the Thetis Island Blog and the Quarterly.

For full information: Thetis Island Nature Conservancy

Look for information posted around the island. Pledge forms are available via our blog page, by emailing us at ThINC@thetisisland.net or by phoning Suzanne Sarioglu at 250.246.9965.

Mosquitoes

I have been doing some research on these small pests. I have found Mosquito Barrier. I have ordered some as I have not been able to sit outside on the deck all summer.

This product is organic, anyone can spray around their yard. How it works ~ one spray lasts one month, it is made from liquid garlic juice. Mosquitoes can not tolerate Garlic. They use a very strong garlic juice. Odourless to humans, but not to the insects. Mosquito Barrier masks the CO2 odour given off by us. while triggering a defence warning to them that this is not a good place for them to be..I have ordered a bottle.

So here's hoping it's is effective. Sold at Art Knapps   Courtenay  (250) 334 3024

Lessons Assistance

Hello Thetis Island.

Our family of five recently moved here to Thetis.
We are a Distance Learning  family that mixes Waldorf with regular curriculum. We are looking to find anyone with a specialty who might want to provide lessons to the children (weekly, monthly or one time) . Please contact us with your area of expertise and hourly rate. Some specifics we are seeking include local wild crafting, handwork, art , music (singing / piano) , dance, martial arts, horse riding, local species identification, and pottery.

I am also seeking an EA (education assistant) who can work with my eldest (11) a couple days per week for a few hours. A retired teacher would be welcome , an EA or anyone with experience working with children, especially special needs children. Preference will be given to anyone with a special education, art, nature,  and or Waldorf background. My eldest is interested in nature, wildcrafting, project based learning, herbs and their medicinal uses, art, pottery, and piano.
If this sounds like a job you might be interested in or perhaps you have one of the qualifications but not all, I encourage you to apply. Please send resume and cover letter explaining your experience, personal interests, and why you would like this job.

A flexible schedule and on time payment via Direct Deposit will be offered.

The position will likely begin in early October and end for the year in early June.
Thank you .

Very Large Hornets Nest ~ Help Needed

We have a very large hornets nets in a yew tree on our property. It is very close to our trailer. At this point they are not bothering us.

So we are wondering if other people have had bad experiences with hornets becoming aggressive later in the summer season. We have had this experience at our home in the interior where they chased us across the yard and stung us and our kids all within a few days.

The nest is too high up to take out with a long bomb. So we would like some feedback. Should we leave them alone and try to co-exist?  Should we try to get rid of them and if so how do we do it?  We would like some feedback.

Thanks
