TIVFD ~ Hand Piled Yard Waste Permits Opening

Small hand-piled yard waste fires will be allowed with permit starting Saturday Sept. 21st.  Please obtain a permit by calling the Permit Pager between 9 am and 5 pm: 250-715-9131 and follow the voice instructions.

We urge you to NOT burn leaves...these can be composted or spread in the forest to nourish the soil, and piled leaves make a great winter mulch for shrubs, trees and plants.

Clothing Swap, Sewing Bee ~ The Beehive

Save the Date for a fall clothing swap and sewing bee (from here on in, referred to as ‘The Beehive’)

Location: Forbes Hall on Saturday, October 26th.

This is a day long event, though feel free to stop by for as little or as long as you like. This even is BYOSM (bring your own sewing machine).  Bring ideas for a new creation, or tart up old favourites with patches or a new sexy hemline. For those of you terrified of needles and the thought of sewing has you running for the hills, this is most importantly of all, a social event! Come to chat, relax and hang out.

This is a good opportunity to share ideas, learn a new sewing skill and have fun upcycling your fall wardrobe.

Everyone is welcome, there is no cost.  Questions?  Ellen Rush, 416-0013 or ellenrush@gmail.com

Missing Tote

Someone inadvertently took a clear plastic tote labelled Globe Subscribers from the recycling yard.  It's needed and I'd be pleased if it was returned...no questions asked.

Thanks

Fishing Trip Openings

Several of us have organized a fishing trip to the Swiftsure Banks off Port Renfrew for Tuesday Sept 17 & 18th.  3 places have opened up.

The group of 9 (6 right now), all from Thetis, is leaving Tues on the 10:35 ferry for Port Renfrew.  We are traveling in the Lamb's 12 passenger van.  We have reservations at the West Coast Trail Motel for that night.  Fishing is in 2-26 foot alum boats with cabins and heads, 4 to a boat.  We will go for the day and fish for both salmon and halibut. The group returns home to Thetis Wednesday night.

Cost is about $400 double occupancy with a full group.  Call Virginia and Andy Lamb for more information 250-246-9770.

FAC ~ BC Ferries update

Good day,

I thought it might be time for a brief update on the BC Ferries file.

As you may remember MoTI (Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure) issued an RFP (Request for Proposals) earlier in the summer to conduct the second round of 'consultations' with ferry dependent communities.  We expect to hear who the successful bidder is shortly.  Personally. I will be surprised if it is not Judy Kirk of Kirk and Company who did the previous round of public meetings.  The public consultations on any proposed service reductions will likely take place later this fall...I will keep you posted as we receive information from BCF and the Ministry.  We, the FACC (Ferry Advisory Committee Chairs) are still trying to get a meeting with the new MoTI Minister Todd Stone.

Please find attached (pdf file) some terrific work by Brian Hollingshead and members of the FACC.  You will find a short recap of the 'user pay' legislation (2003) and how that principle, even though the language was removed with the amendment to the Coastal Ferry Act in 2012, is alive and well...and results in ferry dependent communities continuing to struggle to remain viable with fares that have long since past the 'tipping point' of affordability.  Brian spells out where the money comes from for BCF for Performance Term 3 (PT3) and what we might expect going forward in the face of continued declining ridership.  In other words a reality check into who is really paying what to make this system work.

Any questions, please call...

Best Regards
Keith Rush
