TIVFD Supports Walk for Muscular Dystrophy
Saturday, July 27, 2013 at 2:40PM
The Thetis Island Volunteer Fire Dept. supports Cowichan Bay Fire Dept. Deputy Chief Cam Ferguson in his goal to raise $500. for Muscular Dystrophy Canada on September 28th. Muscular Dystrophy Canada is the Volunteer Fire Fighters' official charity and although we do not formally raise funds here on Thetis Island we try to help out in any way we can. Please visit Cam's personal webpage to make a pledge or contact any TIVFD Fire Fighter and we will be sure to get your donation to him. Even small donations will help him reach his goal.
Click here to go to his webpage.
We will also be placing a Firefighter Boot at every Saturday Fair at the community centre and Sunday Market at Telegraph Harbour Marina for your coins and bills.
Missing Kitty is now the Cat that Came Back!
Saturday, July 27, 2013 at 9:00AM ...the very next day.
I came home tired and a few tears leaked Friday night; and I called his name with little hope - and lo' across the yard came a meow. I stopped dead in my tracks, and called again and the voice answered more loudly, with a tone of urgency, or distraught. I called, he called and we have been snuggling and bonding, happy to be in each other's presence since. Thank you all for raising the vibration and bringing my kitty, Titu home.
earlier post: My beautiful orange tabby has been missing for almost a week. I live between Sunrise Point and Clam Bay road on Pilkey Point. Titu, is his name (sounds like TyeToo). He has a big, beautiful, expressive tail, he is small in build and is friendly and curious. If you have seen him I would love to know, please email me at dawn_gordon@telus.net or call and leave a message - phone 250-246-9212. He might go as far as Klahowya, I don't know how far a kitty goes when he is playing with his raccoon buddies!
Thank you.

Compassionate Communication Workshop
Friday, July 26, 2013 at 11:03PM Monday, August 26, 9:30am - 4:30pm
Forbes Hall, Thetis Island
In both our work and our personal lives, we all want to relate to people with compassion and respect, while not being “pushovers”.
Nonviolent Communication (NVC) is a heartfelt way to listen, speak, and live empathically – with others, and with the many voices and aspects of ourselves.
Through structured activities using real situations, you will begin to:
• Shift from judgments and anger toward those on “the other side” to shared understanding
• Develop self-empathy and take responsibility for your present moment
• Express your feelings and needs with authenticity and without blame and criticism
Workshop fee: $90. Includes materials and snacks. Please bring a lunch.
(*We want to make this training accessible to as many people with different financial resources as possible, while supporting ourselves to continue sharing this work. If cost is an obstacle, please contact us.)

How to Field or Dry Strip a Cigarette Butt:
Friday, July 26, 2013 at 8:43PM The fire damage done by a cigarette butt that hasn't been extinguished can be devastating. Even a cigarette butt that has been put out contributes to the litter problem that faces many communities. A simple solution to these problems is to field-strip a cigarette.
Instructions
1. Stub out a cigarette on a hard surface to extinguish it after you are finished smoking it.
2. Double-check to make sure that there are no remaining embers in the cigarette. If there are still embers, continue to stub the cigarette until it is completely out.
3. Gently knock the tobacco out of the cigarette by stubbing it against a hard surface.
4. Roll the remaining part of cigarette above the filter in between your fingers to loosen any tobacco that is still stuck inside of the cigarette.
5. Continue to stub and roll the cigarette until all of the tobacco has been removed. You will be left with the filter and the paper that held the tobacco.
6. Put the cigarette paper and filter into a trash can to dispose of it. If you don't have access to a trash can, put the paper and filter back in your cigarette pack or some other place where you can dispose of it later.
(Please note that the dried tobacco that you took out of the paper contains toxins and can harm plants or animals if disposed of on soil or where it can wash into soil or water.)

Quick Thinking Averts Stupidity Fire
Friday, July 26, 2013 at 4:24PM
The quick thinking of a visitor from Saskatchewan waiting in the ferry lineup and a Capernwray staff member with a bucket and a phone averted what could have easily become a serious incident this afternoon. Around 1:15 pm someone carelessly flicked a cigarette butt into the peat moss at the side of the road by the ferry terminal. The smouldering fire was spotted and the visitor emptied a can of pop onto it while the Capernwray staff member called 911 and filled an ice-cream bucket of water from her house and doused it further. Eleven fire fighters and both fire engines responded to this near miss. We were lucky this time.
