From the Library

A Friend of the Library is available Saturday 10-1, Sunday 1-4 Celine will be there if you want to check out the online catalogue. The library will be a cool space to relax in this hot weather.
Enjoy

The Book and Bake sale is quickly approaching. I will update you on the time to drop book donations, set out books etc. I hope it is not too hot for our generous bakers to do their thing.

August 3 Parade

We hope you are getting your parade float planned or are checking out the spot you want to plant your lawn chair for the August 3rd Thetis Island Parade.
We may not be the biggest parade…heck, we may even be the smallest parade, but Islanders are creative and like to have fun.

The Fabulous Forbes Hall Library Book & Bake Sale is being held that morning at the Community Centre and they are selling lunches there too. So you can put your float in the line up on Mission Road early, buy some books and cookies, eat a great lunch, and be ready for the parade kick-off. We hope to start down Mission Road at about 1:30, head down North Cove Road to Pilkey Point Road and then down the hill to Marina Drive, loop around Telegraph Harbour Marina and back up the hill. The viewing crowds get to cheer twice! Special appearance for the kids…Sparky, the Fire Prevention Dog.

There will be a poster contest for any child aged up to 11 years old to ride at the front of the parade in the Fire Engine. Details in a later e-Spokes.

Water for Birds

Today I found a little bird sitting on our wooden bench dazed and suffering from dehydration.

The bird let me hold it while I gave it drops of water until such time it was fully hydrated and could fly off.

During this heat wave please leave water out for the birds and fill it often as needed. Also, if you put a bowl of water out, place a rock in the middle of it for the birds to stand on otherwise they could drown.

The birds thank you!

COASTAL FIRE WEATHER WEEKEND FORECAST

Thurs-Fri: Changes have begun, after a typical wet June, Summer takes over as hot and dry conditions spread throughout the Coastal Fire Centre. A ridge of high pressure offshore will continue to move east into the province bringing dry conditions with some potentially record-breaking temperatures. Overall, we’ll see a typical light to moderate SW inflow on the mainland. This is our first significant hot and dry feature this year and will last into mid next week with the peak being this weekend. Friday, we continue to see the ridge build and bring hotter temperatures and dry conditions. Expect light to moderate SW inflow winds.

Sat-Mon: This period will be the peak for the ridge, with temperatures in the high 20s to mid-30s widespread throughout the Coastal Fire Centre. Crossover conditions expected through many areas. Seeing some lower RH values in those areas we’ve been watching in the Fraser and Pemberton zones as well as to the north in Tweedsmuir Park. Saturday late afternoon and evening a slight surface trough gives us a weak outflow into Sunday morning, overnight recoveries won’t be as strong. Otherwise, winds continue to be light to moderate and generally stay with a SW flow.

Canada Day Pancake Breakfast: Thank You!

To Virginia Lamb and the incredible team of volunteers, we thank you for the amazing event you offered to Thetis Islanders and visitors to celebrate Canada Day.

Serving 170 breakfasts in 2 hours is quite a feat, and it was wonderful to see so many families attending.

Initiatives like this help make Thetis the wonderful place it is!

Our sincere appreciation,

the TICA Board

You can't have enough info on Wild Bees - Ever!!

Since I started in 'wild bee real estate' a few years ago I add every year a few more bee homes in my garden. Just because it is fun to do. And my garden/flower - vegetable pollination is getting better by the year. The last 'residents' which moved into my bee homes - besides all different kind of mason bees - were Leaf cutter bees.

Don't waste your time with industrial honey bees - wild bees are way more efficient with pollinating AND they don't sting!!

Here a link I found from SFU which I believe has a nice overview about our wild bees.

If you need help with 'bee home building' just contact me. Contact info >> see Thetis phone book
