Back to the Future: Time Change for August Parade

The TICA schedule has just posted that SATURDAY, AUGUST 3rd is also the famously fantastic Book & Bake Sale at Forbes Hall from 10 to 1 pm.

Because of this community opportunity the TIVFD is changing the timing of the Thetis Island PARADE to 1 pm.

You can bring your “float” entry to Mission Road by the fire hall any time that morning, go over to the Book & Bake Sale and even buy some lunch there.

Then the parade will kick off at 1 pm sharp

This will be a great Saturday to celebrate the BC Day Long Weekend and you can quietly rest on Sunday.

Weekend Coastal Fire Centre Weather

Weather Forecast

Sat-Mon:

After good to excellent overnight recoveries, a generally dry day is expected on Saturday in between systems. Maximum temperatures remain on the low side. On Sunday the next upper trough spreads showers across the Fire Centre, accompanied by slightly moderating daytime maximum temperatures, as this system is originating from the southwest, rather than out of the Gulf of Alaska. Monday features drying and a little warmer over the southern zones as a ridge over the US SW pokes into southern BC but northern zones remain unsettled under a brisk jet-stream.

Tues-Sat (6 to 10 day):

Good confidence on the overall extend pattern although details on the intensity of the system late Tuesday are still unclear. Models develop a significant fall-like system southwest of Vancouver Island on Tuesday morning and rain spreads across most of the Fire Centre during the day. Wednesday is cool and unsettled with widespread showers. Drying and some warming is expected Thursday and Friday as ensembles build an upper ridge just offshore.

Paramedic Services Week

This week, across Canada, is Paramedic Services Week where we recognize the hard working paramedics for their dedication and challenges they face in the field.

The TIVFD recognizes the BCEHS Stations 149 (Chemainus) 152 (Duncan) and 159 (Ladysmith) paramedics who travel over on the Island Responder to meet our patients and transport them to Cowichan District Hospital or other trauma facilities.

We also are sending a shout-out to our Community Paramedic Vinh Pham who visits Thetis regularly to serve our community’s need for ongoing health support.

Cemetery Clean Up May 25th

On Saturday May 25th from 10-3, St. Margaret’s Cemetery Committee will be having its annual maintenance day. The cemetery is a vault of island history and is the permanent home for many of our forebears. From tidying up headstones, to general landscaping there will be a range of projects to suit everyone's interests and abilities.

Please plan to come by and join us, we encourage everyone to join. If possible, please bring small garden tools for general landscaping and/or scrub brushes and water pails to clean grave markers. We would encourage you to contribute to the picnic lunch, where we will remember and celebrate the lives that came before us.

Please contact me if you have any questions.

Pullerbear Available to Borrow

ThINC has purchased a Pullerbear tool to assist with the periodic removal of invasive plants in the nature reserves. We would like to make it available on loan to property owners on Thetis to control invasives on their own properties. The tool works a charm for removing medium to large size plants such as holly up to about 2" diameter trunk.

Note: The tool is very effective (and strangely satisfying) for broom removal but is NOT the recommended method. The disturbed soil triggers dormant seeds to germinate, and you can expect to see baby broom in that area next year.

The recommended approach for broom removal is to cut larger broom (1/2" diameter for greater) just below the ground level. Hear from the experts:broombusters.org and the Invasive Species Council of BC .

To make arrangements to borrow the tool, contact ThINC at info@thetisislandnatureconservancy.org
