Just a reminder that the post office is closed today for Truth and Reconciliation Day.

We will be open as normal at 10am on Tuesday.

National Day of Reconciliation (Thetis Island Event)

For those of you that are not attending events on the big island we are looking to have a small event.

National Day of Reconciliation gathering today (Monday) at 10:00 at the head of Telegraph Harbour.

Look for the deck chairs on Pilkey Point Road.

Discussion of the events leading to the establishment of the Day.

Bring your coffee / tea/ Latte and a chair.

PAG - Plant of the Week #27 – Rose

And the last POTW posting for the season is: Rose!

Prior to being the People’s Apothecary Garden, the space was primarily a rose garden, hosting several of Carolyn Askew’s large and beautiful rose cultivars (a plant variety that is produced through selective breeding).

When designing the PAG in 2020, we made sure to preserve the rose bushes, because apart from bearing enchanting flowers, they provide aromatherapy and their rose hips (fruit) are filled with nutrients. 

Rose hips are edible, raw or cooked, and all rose hips from native, non-native, and cultivar plants are high in vitamin C (20x more than in oranges!) and have properties that are excellent for healthy skin. 

However, if you are looking to support wildlife, go with native species, such as those found on Thetis: the larger, Nootka rose, and the smaller and more delicate, baldhip rose (Hul'q'umi’num: Oel'qulhp and Xwiinhp, respectively). The reason for this is that cultivars are bred for their flower, and thus focus on the petal vs. the pollen / nectar.

That’s a wrap for this year’s PAG Plant of the Week. I hope they’ve been informative and enjoyable to read. The primary purpose of this activity was to highlight some of the plants at the PAG (and that can be harvested there) and to whet your appetite for medicinal plants!

Thanks to all of you who came to Forbes Hall on Saturday morning to get the gardens and grounds tidied up.  I did a walk around the building later in the day and was so appreciative of all that you accomplished – edges done, weeds pulled, plants tidied and not a blackberry runner left in any of the garden areas.

Noon Hour Supervisor Needed – Thetis Island Elementary

We are currently looking to hire a Noon Hour Supervisor for our Thetis Island School. (11:30 am -12:30 pm).

The position was originally posted as a position for one person, however, we can accommodate making it a shared position to allow for needed time off island, if that is preferable to the applicants.

Silversmithing Course: Change of Time

Since Saturdays are busy, especially with Christmas markets, I am moving the beginner’s silver jewelry making classes to Sunday 11-1, or a second class on Thursday afternoons 2-4.

This should give more folks some options on which day would work best for them.
