Disappointed

Apparently, all the thieves aren't on the water! I've been doing a bobcat job on Forbes Road and was awaiting the delivery of a load of gravel Monday afternoon. I left my truck and trailer at the job site on Forbes Road about 11 am. I returned after Fran delivered the gravel at 5 to find someone had stolen my tie down chain, tire blocks and jack stand - they must have been in a hurry because they only took one of the two stands.

I usually leave my keys in the truck - as someone said to me 17 years ago when we moved here "we leave the keys in the car because you never know when someone will need it".

No more. Times have changed. And not for the better.

Geoduck Clam Application Summary & Issues for Consideration

Thank you, Matthias, for posting the links to the Abrupt Shellfish Inc application for geoduck shellfish aquaculture in Preedy Harbour. There are a few key application points that should be noted:

1. Proposed aquaculture area: 18.8 hectares (46.5 acres)
2. Aquaculture type: Subtidal on/in bottom culture
3. Usage of predator netting: 48,200 sq. meters (518,820 sq. feet)
4. Zoning: Change required from W4 to W5 by Island Trust
5. Shellfish type: Geoduck (Hatchery) and Horse Clam (Natural Set)
6. Production Start & Amount: 300 tonnes of Geoduck in 2024
7. Closest community indicated: Chemainus

Zoning Change Application:
On February 02, 2020, Abrupt Shellfish applied for a zoning change to the Island Trust. The Thetis Island Local Trust Committee Meeting Agenda Notes of June 02, 2020, give a good overview - pages 08-65.
https://islandstrust.bc.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/th_202...

Here is a key background statement from the Island's Trust's associated staff report:
"Abrupt Shellfish Inc. made an application to Front Counter BC in 2017 for a subtidal crown land tenure for the on-bottom culture of geoducks and horse clams (by catch). A referral from Front Counter BC for the current crown land licence of occupation application was responded to by the Northern Office planning staff in 2018, which recommended refusal of the project due to the lack of permissible zoning. Despite the response, the applicant has chosen to apply to rezone. As such, the application must be processed and provided due process."

Some geoduck industry information found on the internet:
1. "Geoduck Aquaculture"; Denman Island Marine Stewards - https://adims.ca/geoduck/
2. "Gear, not geoducks, impacts ecosystem if farming increases"; University of Washington - https://www.washington.edu/news/2015/10/21/gear-not-geoducks...
3. "B.C.’s $50 million geoduck industry hit after China’s market slumps"; Victoria News - https://www.vicnews.com/news/b-c-s-50-million-geoduck-indust...
4. "What is the price of geoduck?"; Fathom Seafoods - https://fathomseafood.com/blogs/news/what-is-the-price-of-ge...

On a final note, I would like to point out that in B.C., 90% of geoducks are exported to Asia, with wholesale pricing in 2020 at $20-30 per pound making Abrupt Shellfish's application target of 300 tonnes from Preedy Harbour in 2024 worth a gross value of $13.2M to $19.8M.

"In British Columbia - More than 90 percent of geoducks harvested in B.C. are exported and sold to Chinese markets where the demand is huge, apparently due to its aphrodisiac properties." Fathom Seafoods, December 02, 2021.

Moore Hill Power Line

I understand that BC Hydro is planning to run a new pole line along Pilkey Point Road along Moore Hill. It appears to have been staked. I thought I should give a bit of history on this for consideration by the community.

When we were working on the second phase of Meadow Valley BC Hydro were, at the time, planning to put this same pole line in. The community was very much opposed to the proposed approach, because of the impact on trees along the line, in an area that is not just beautiful but also a sensitive ecosystem.

To avoid this impact, I agreed with BC Hydro to allow them to run the line down on Phase 2 of the development, and to support that we built road accesses to their requirements for the pole locations and cleared the line--even though this meant cutting through a forested area which I had hoped to leave natural and impacting lots with the road accesses. This was a significant cost, and impact, but I considered it worthwhile because it maintained (as far as possible) the connection of canopy between the bluffs to the west of the road and Moore Hill to the east. The alignment was chosen to minimize impact, particularly where the line went up and down the hill.

To further protect this area I created common property along the road allowance alignment and placed a conservation covenant on that area, in the hope that eventually Moore Hill would also be protected by a covenant--which, happily, it now is.

If BC Hydro now change their minds and build the line down Pilkey Point Road the result will be the same cutting of large numbers of trees and opening of the canopy that the community originally proposed, plus the past and ongoing impact of the line that now services phase 2 lots in Meadow Valley on its way to Pilkey Point (or, even worse, new lines down from the road to each lot which would completely destroy the continuity of the covenant protected area and leave space for invasive species to take over--which I understand one Hydro rep. suggested).

I can understand that BC Hydro would prefer the maintenance of the main transmission line down the road, but they have committed themselves to protecting that area in the past in full knowledge of what they were getting into. I hope that the community will take action to dissuade them from going back on their commitment. If they want to improve access to the existing poles, they have the ability to do that and I for one would assist them--so they have no reasonable excuse for their planned pole line.

The Kuper at Point Hope Shipyards

Islander Gregg Humphreys sent some pictures with the following message:
"I was out riding my bike today in Victoria, and went past the Point Hope shipyards, where I saw the Kuper. I thought ... others might be interested in seeing the major project that’s taking place. It is completely enveloped in scaffolding and plastic wrap, with a crew of workers scrambling over her. Kind of interesting."

I have posted the images on the FB/Meta page Thetis and Peneluxutth' Islands Connect! I hope the link will work
