Fire Department Website

The Thetis Island Fire Department Website at www.thetisislandfire.ca will be Out of Service for the next few weeks as we make a changeover to a new site administrator. Therefore, on the site the Fire Danger Rating image will not be current, and nothing new will be posted.

For current fire rating information please read e-Spokes or look at the big Fire Dept Board across from the ferry, or phone the Duty Officer at 250-252-0228, or write to firechief@thetisislandfire.ca.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Lost: iPhone 14 in a Clear Plastic Case

I lost my iPhone while kayaking at Pilkey Point. After arriving at the point, my kayaking partner and I left our vessels on the shore. I took my phone out of the kayak and placed it on the rocks before going for a swim. When I returned, the phone was no longer where I had left it.

If found, please contact me at 825-733-9291 or by email at marlower1@icloud.com.

Thanks in advance for your help,

Marlowe

Goosey Gander Shop closed for Fun Day, open Sunday

The Shop will be closed on Saturday, hoping to see you instead at Forbes Hall for the annual TICF Fun Day!

Sunday the Shop will be open again as usual from 10am to 4pm so that you can browse all the new things that arrived this week along with all the other bargains and one-of-a-kind items in the Shop.

Quite a few guy things came in, like an extra-large toolbox, a drill press converter, two antique metal machinists’ levels, a metal parts box with 28 drawers, an old heavy-duty pulley, and a square chimney brush. There’s a funky set of speakers and a downrigger too.

Lots and lots of really lovely new jewelry also arrived, a vintage picnic basket, avocado covers, and brand-new silicone reusable bags. Some charming salt & pepper shakers came in and trinket boxes too, a studded silver one, a wooden Norwegian hand painted one and an Italian hand painted alabaster hinged box. And for hours and hours of fun, some brand-new unopened jigsaw puzzles have arrived too.

Have a very Fun Day Saturday and all-around great weekend!

Thank you,

Nan Beals

TICF Family Fun Day, Saturday August 9th: Forbes Hall

Several things to note and help you plan your day!

  • No dogs (or other pets) on site.
  • No parking on the Forbes Hall grounds.

Lots of roadside parking in the vicinity, however, be mindful of traffic, lots of children expected, and of course we need to keep Mission Road passable for our Fire Department.

  • Tennis Court will be closed from Friday 3PM to Saturday 3PM to allow set-up and clean-up.
  • Bring your lawn chair for comfort and flexibility of seating.

Nature House: What’s On Tomorrow?

Coming up this Friday, August 8:

10:00 AM Junior Biologists: Let’s get Physiological!

Location: The Nature House at The Portal, 254 North Cove Road

Why do sheep have square eyes? How do 200 ft trees transfer water from their roots to their leaves? Put these burning questions to rest this Friday and explore the basics of physiology with us. With examples from the Portal’s resident sheep, we will discover what systems allow animals, including us, to grow, breathe, eat and move.

2:00 PM Expert Excursion: Soils with Ian Ralston (youth, adults)

Location: 412 Klahowya (meet in the Driveway)

This Expert Excursion begins with a peaceful, silent walk through the Meadow Valley forest, awakening your senses and attuning you to the living landscape beneath your feet. From there, we’ll delve into the fascinating world of soil - how it forms, the hidden life it sustains, and what it reveals about our relationship with the natural world. Through hands-on exploration, you’ll learn to identify various soil types, observe key characteristics, and interpret the subtle indicators soil provides. Whether you're gardening, planning irrigation, or building with natural materials, understanding soil can transform how you engage with the land - deepening connection, enhancing sustainability, and grounding your practice in harmony with nature.

No Outdoor Fires, Including Campfires, Until October 31.

Propane campfires are allowed.

That wonderful rainfall overnight Tuesday and cooler temperatures gave us over 12mm of rain. This is bringing down the Fire Danger Class Rating and if all goes well (continuing cooler temperatures with good humidity recovery overnight) we will open up High Hazard Activities and most likely have no 1 pm shutdowns.

We will post on Thursday afternoon what the results are for the Danger Class Rating and the forecast for the weekend.
