Thetis Community Assembly – Meeting Notes

Spring is Here, and the Sports Court Awaits You!

Pickleball is up and running and has expanded to include family play.

Remember that the sports court is available for a variety of sports, with a goal net, basketball hoop, and a great tennis court! In addition, we are happy to see many different sports played, from afterschool kids play to families shooting hoops, playing roller- hockey, learning to ride bikes, and more. There is equipment housed on the court so be aware of this when you are playing.

There’s a blackboard on the adjacent covered patio, if you want to book your play ahead of time. And, as always, you’re allowed to drop in at any time to play outside of scheduled or pre-booked games.

Pacific Herring Talk - Tuesday, March 31 (Zoom)

For those who missed Jim Shortreed’s presentation on herring at Forbes Hall last month, or for anyone inspired by the remarkable marine activity around us during this year’s herring run, you’ll have another opportunity to learn more.

Pacific Herring in the Strait of Georgia: Status, Science, and the Path to Recovery
Tuesday, March 31 at 6:30 PM (via Zoom)

Jim Shortreed has spent several years researching Pacific herring using Department of Fisheries and Oceans data, harvest records, and rebuilding plans. He is also actively involved in grassroots efforts advocating for a pause on industrial herring fisheries until stocks have recovered.

This timely talk will provide valuable insight into the current state of herring populations and what recovery could look like, especially relevant as we witness the vibrant return of marine life along our shores.

The People’s Apothecary Garden: Volunteer Callout

The People’s Apothecary Garden (PAG), located at 62 North Cove Road, is getting ready for another season, and we’re looking for a few extra hands this spring.

The garden is used for school programs and summer workshops focused on herbal medicine, sustainable gardening, and ecological stewardship. We’re looking for volunteers to help out during April and May to keep the space in good shape.

Tasks include weeding, pruning, and general garden care.

No experience is needed - everyone is welcome. You can join for a one-off session or come by more regularly - whatever works for you. You’d be joining me, and often my two-year-old, Pao, who takes his “helping” role pretty seriously.

Please note that yard waste fires or barrel burns are restricted to the period between 6 am or 1 hour after sunrise (whichever is later) and 6 pm or 2 hours before sunset (whichever is earlier). You must have water at the site, and the fire must be attended at all times.

Start Planning Your Float!

Your Fire Department invites you to join in on Community Parade fun on SATURDAY AUGUST 29th, so you have lots of time to plan for your parade entry.

We will be kicking off the parade with our new Engine 1 that should be arriving in June, so we are really excited to show it off to everyone.

As most of you know, this is an extremely informal parade that leaves Mission Road, travels to Pilkey Point Road down the hill, then around Marina Drive and back up the hill and back to Mission Road. Lots of deck chair space on the sides of the road to watch the comings and goings.

Special guest SPARKY the Fire Safety Dog will have treats for the kids.

(If you have a motorized parade entry make sure that it is capable of braking going down the hill and can make it back up the hill safely. Bicycle entries must wear helmets.)

All are welcome to participate! No sign-up needed.
We will remind you again closer to the date.

Winch?

I'm searching for someone with an electric winch on the ceiling of their garage with a remote that I could try for 5 minutes a day for a week to see if it helps me to stretch out my back. I just bought a spinal decompression harness & would like to try it before I buy a winch to attach to my ceiling. I zip-lined in Costa Rica 15 years ago & that was the only relief that my back had given me in 30 years that lasted more than a few days.
