Some Confusion on High Hazard Activities Dates

There is a bit of confusion on how the High Hazard Activities allowance or ban works. High Hazard Activities are mechanical activities that produce sparks that could ignite combustibles in or near the forest. When the Wildfire Danger Class readings reach HIGH HAZARD, all High Hazard Activities must cease at 1 pm, and a 2-hour fire watch posted for signs of smoke. Typical High Hazard activities are metal blades striking rocks, sparks from exhausts, etc.

When the Danger Class readings go up to EXTREME, you still have the first three days of EXTREME to work to 1 pm, with fire watch after. The day following those three days, all High Hazard Activities must cease. However, when we drop from EXTREME to HIGH again, you have to wait for the first three days in HIGH with the complete ban still on. After three days in HIGH (that followed EXTREME) then it opens back up to early shift, with activities allowed to 1 pm and a fire watch posted.

When we drop to MODERATE, High-Risk Activities are allowed, with sensible precautions to not start a wildfire. No solid fuel fires are allowed until October 31st, regardless of the Danger Class Readings…the BC government has decreed this regulation.

I hope this clears things up a bit. Questions or concerns: call the Duty Officer at 250-252-0228. If you see smoke call 911.

Going to Costco?

We returned something to Costco yesterday and I forgot a small tool kit that goes with it. If someone is going to Costco this week, we would really appreciate it if you could return to the return desk.

Need Heavy-Duty Strapping

We ordered a small air conditioner for our cottage, but when it arrived, and after we'd opened it, we realized they'd sent the wrong model and size. So we have to pack it up to ship it back. But the heavy-duty strapping (nylon or plastic) can't be reused. Does anyone on the island have the capacity to re-strap a large package for us? If so, or if someone else has dealt with this problem, please let us know, and what we should expect for cost?    veronicashelford@gmail.com,graemeshelford@gmail.com or 250-246 1509

Monday - Early Shift

That Friday/Saturday rain has allowed the Fire Hazard data to change enough to drop back into HIGH and early shift activities. You can run your chainsaws, excavators, saw-mills, lawnmowers etc. until 1 pm starting Monday and then post a two hour fire watch. No solid fuel campfires are allowed. Thank you to all who are using their propane campfire appliances.

Let’s hope we can continue in HIGH and get a lot of our work done before 1 pm until it climbs back up to EXTREME again. And it would be great if we could drop down to MODERATE and use these long days.

We will keep you posted.
