Jams and Jellies

Hello Thetis Islanders, this year I will not be selling my jams and jellies at the Summer Market. But lucky for you that Jen and Jaime at Telegraph Harbour Marina have graciously taken on my jams and jellies to sell at the cafe/store.

Thank-you

Recommendations Wanted - Countertops

Does anyone have any recommendations for reasonably priced quartz or laminate countertops?

I've only located one company so far who only make countertops & install them here.

Structure Protection Unit

The Structure Protection Unit (SPU) auxiliary of the TIVFD continues to prepare for this summer’s wildfire season.

With our Fire Hazard recently moving to HIGH, now is the time to mow and trim tall grass around your home and property. In the event of a wildfire, embers can easily ignite dry grasses. Ensure to complete your activity by 1pm and then post a fire watch for one hour.

Visit https://firesmartbc.ca/  or more FireSmart tasks that could save your home from wildfire.

For a free HPP FireSmart home assessment with property-specific recommendations on how to mitigate wildfire risk for your home, please contact your SPU at firesmartthetisisland@gmail.com

Wildfire Smoke

The smoke from the out-of-control wildfire near Sayward on Vancouver Island that started on Monday at around 5:30 pm (human caused) has now reached south of Nanaimo Tuesday morning.  The smoke is moderate at this time but persons with respiratory concerns should take precautions.  The wildfire near Port Renfrew is now controlled, and the one near Port Alberni has been extinguished.

On the upside, the Sayward fire smoke should give us some colourful sunsets.

Report all Thetis Island daytime smoke columns to 911.

Thank you for being vigilant at the start of this Wildfire season.

Campfire Permits First Half of June

Evening Campfire Permits will be available for the June 1 to June 15th period, online at thetisislandfire.ca.  We are getting some overnight “recovery” (higher humidity) in the evenings during this Danger Class 4 (HIGH Hazard) period.  Be aware that a permit may be cancelled at any time due to fire hazard conditions.

No other burning (yard waste, burn barrels, binary exploding rockets, tiki lamps, sky lanterns, fireworks etc.) is allowed.

HIGH Danger Class means all activities that might produce a spark near or in a forest or grassland must cease by 1 pm, followed by a two-hour fire watch.

Regulations require you to have a minimum of 8 Litres of water at the campfire and a tool, and campfires must be thoroughly extinguished so that they don’t “go to ground” and pop up a couple of weeks later from underground smouldering.
