Fire Danger Going Up

We knew this was going to happen this week unless it rained some more, but it didn’t rain. So, Thursday we will be back in EXTREME and High Hazard Activities must cease. You still have until Wednesday 1 pm to get some chainsawing, mowing, etc. work done and then post a fire watch.

Fires can ignite quickly and unexpectedly, and progress faster than you think. Lots of people have been passing this short video around showing how a cigarette butt that the smoker was sure he put out turned into a huge hedge fire in North Vancouver hours later:

Watch for sparks. Be safe. Keep us safe.

If this time does not work for you, let me know.

Set up for the sale will be at 11:00 am on Friday. It usually goes quickly as I traditionally have many helpers.

ThINC Nature House - August Calendar and Aug 2-6 Events

With a wee nip in the air (at least at night), the ThINC Nature House program is moving into its second half. Our July calendar was full of many fun events - from learning about geodesic domes and solar power to coastal archaeology and climate justice. We tasted teas of all sorts at the PAG (some desirable, some not), counted bats in the dark, and made beautiful works of art using nature as our muse. Many experts from off-island came over to give presentations, and many more community members shared their wealth of knowledge through diverse workshops.

The August calendar will be a continuum of fun-filled July NH events, and can be found on our website: www.thetisislandnatureconservancy.org

And our event line-up for this week, August 2 - 6 is as follows:

Wednesday, August 2

10:00 am start - Five Important Medicinals with Carol Swann at the PAG (all ages)

Thursday, August 3

2:00 pm - 4:00 pm drop-in - Wild Creatives: Leaf Garlands / Buntings at the Nature House (all ages)

6:30 pm start - ThINC Tank: Screening and Discussion: Our Daily Bread at the Nature House (youth, adults)

Friday, August 4

10:00 am start - Young Naturalists: Terrific Trees! at the Nature House (all ages)

2:00 pm start - Expert Excursions: Pruning and Grafting of Fruit Trees presented by John Errington at 92 Hollyberry Lane (all ages)

Saturday, August 5

2:00 pm - 4:00 pm - Seaquarium Drop-in at the Nature House (all ages)

Sunday, August 6

10:00 am - 12:00 am drop-in - Harvest Hours at The PAG (all ages)

2:00 pm - 4:00 pm S4: Great Grizzlies with Fran Backhouse at the Nature House (all ages)

30-Foot or Longer Ladder Needed

I’m hoping to borrow a long ladder for a couple of days in August. Would be much appreciated if anyone has one to lend.

Horsemanship and Horse-Riding Lessons

I offer two options:

A monthly part lease where kids can visit up to three times a week to learn basic horsemanship. Skye the miniature horse would love to meet new friends. This would be an overview of some of the responsibilities of owning a horse without needing to actually own one: learning how to safely interact with a horse from the ground, how to groom a horse and earn its trust, and depending on confidence levels could be led around on the pony or learn some basic equitation. This would be $100/mth with a minimum one-month commitment.

If you are more interested in riding lessons, I can also do that for a flat rate of $25 for a one-hour lesson. Lessons can be done on the mini or my larger mare, Marigold, depending on comfort level. (Marigold can do more) This would be basic equitation for beginners, like how to hold oneself in the saddle and ask the horse to follow simple commands.

If you are interested, please email or text Crimson at 250-416-9695 or crimsonmcclellan@gmail.com

Please ensure you or your child have Horse Council BC insurance if you would like to be around horses: https://hcbc.ca/

Happy Workers Looking for PT Work

I recently met a couple of young travellers who are visiting and interested in spending a bit of time exploring Thetis Island. They are hoping to acquire some PT work here on the island to help sustain themselves while checking out our island life. They are helping us out working on varied chores that we have needed doing for a while.

If you are needing a little help around your home/garden I’m very happy to offer a recommendation for Breyanne Cowan and Chanel Threefingers. You won’t be disappointed; they are competent and capable workers.

Best way to connect with them is to write a note outlining your needs, along with your contact information, and drop it off for them at Telegraph Harbour Marina, or leave with Solar Bud when he is working at Marylyn’s Kiosk.

Either way they will get it.

Jollity Weekly Order Reminders (New Product News & Eggs!)

Local dairy, eggs and bread orders are due by Monday at 5pm.

New this week!

Cowichan Milk has just launched their newest product... Chocolate Milk!
We have added to this week's order form and we'll pop some in the fridges at the Marinas this week.

Reminder - we stock the fridges at Telegraph and Thetis Island Marinas with fresh produce every Wed. morning and restock milk, eggs and more produce on Fridays.

We've had a hard time keeping up with the demand for eggs lately as our teenage chickens aren't quite laying yet and the next generation of chicks has a ways to go. Our farmer friends from Cobble Hill will supply us with additional 'EcoEggs' during these busy summer months. It's a pretty cool operation these award-winning young farmers run! Their pasture raised chickens nest and lay eggs in a solar powered barn and are a fed a mix of farm veg and grubs. In fact, the farmers are working on a really innovative project partnering with a local university to build a closed loop system where they can rear their own Black Soldier Fly larvae to feed the chickens. It's the most natural diet for a chicken and thus results in really delicious and nutritious eggs!

Fingers crossed for the best local corn coming soon... if we can get it this week we'll add to the order form :)

With thanks,
Jollity Farmers

Quarterly Deadline Reminder

This is just a heads-up that either we need to have your articles, reports, stories, ads etc. by August 1st, or we need to know they're coming, and roughly how much space to allow for them. Please send items (or expectations) to quarterly@thetisisland.net and if you haven't had a reply of some kind within a day or two, please call me at 250-246-1509.

We don't want to miss anything because of internet glitches!

Thanks to all, contributors and readers alike,
