Update: Chemainus - Penelakut - Thetis

Issued at: 12:30 pm

The earlier staffing shortage that BC Ferries experienced on the Kuper has been partially resolved. The vessel will sail as scheduled for the following sailings of today, November 12:

2:50 pm departing Thetis Island
3:10 pm departing Penelakut Island
3:50 pm departing Chemainus
4:25 pm departing Penelakut Island
4:45 pm departing Thetis Island
5:25 pm departing Chemainus

As BC Ferries has been unsuccessful in securing the required number of crew on the Kuper, the following sailings for today, November 12, have been cancelled:

Cancelled Sailings:
6:00 pm departing Thetis Island
6:20 pm departing Penelakut Island
7:00 pm departing Chemainus
7:45 pm departing Thetis Island
8:05 pm departing Penelakut Island
8:55 pm departing Chemainus
9:30 pm departing Penelakut Island
9:50 pm departing Thetis Island
10:30 pm departing Chemainus
11:05 pm departing Penelakut Island

A 10-passenger water taxi has been sourced to provide complimentary service on the same schedule as the above cancelled sailings, which will depart from the ferry terminals.

Other sailings on this route are expected to proceed as scheduled.

We require a specific number of crew members on board the vessel to ensure the safety of our passengers in the unlikely event of an emergency and to comply with Transport Canada regulations. The decision to cancel a sailing in these circumstances is made when we have exhausted all options to find replacement crew. That said, if circumstances change and replacement crew become available, we will notify customers immediately.

For the most up-to-date sailing and departure information, follow @BCFerries on Twitter.

We appreciate your patience and apologize for any inconvenience you may experience as a result of these cancellations.

Christmas Food Bank Collection

The TIVFD will have a box at the front door for your donations of non-expired, non-perishable grocery items, unwrapped children’s toys, and new useful household or personal goods STARTING DECEMBER 1st.  If you have extra Christmas wrap and Christmas cards you wont be using, those items will also be gratefully accepted.

Your donations will be brought inside daily.  The last date for donations will be December 21st.  Your gifts will help both our local food bank and Harvest House in Chemainus where many of our neighbours need assistance to make the holiday season a little more comforting and a little less anxious for them.

We require a specific number of staff members on board the vessel to ensure the safety of our passengers in the unlikely event of an emergency and to comply with Transport Canada regulations. Should any sailings be impacted, we will notify customers via Service Notice as soon as the information is confirmed.

The decision to cancel a sailing in these circumstances is made when we have exhausted all options to find replacement staff. If circumstances change and replacement staff become available, we would notify customers immediately.

A Bad Break

Thetis Woody, the chipper, will be sadly inactive for a month or more while his swamper recovers from some fractured/broken ribs. The fateful "break" does not ring of bravado incurred in the line of duty nor does it ring of lack of "Whoa" when at play.

No, none of the above, it was a solo event where my tub was the last contestant standing and I was not.

Until the ribs heal up, Woody's swamper will be taking a slower approach to things more like the tortoise rather than the hare.

This swamper is currently just thankful for each breath and painfully reminded of each one I've taken for granted.

God does ask us to be still and know that He is God.

Perhaps it's time to be still for a wee bit.

Woody's Swamper,
Greg Gall

PS maybe I should work on a song entitled, "I'm all Shook Up"
