ESS Volunteers Needed

Dear Thetis Island,

Some of you may be aware that Emergency Social Services on Thetis Island is currently leaderless. ESS is part of the BC Emergency Management System and operates under the authority of CVRD Emergency Management. The role of ESS on Thetis Island is to provide resources in an emergency and to help with temporary (72 hour) relief e.g., a house fire.

The CVRD Emergency Prep Workbook also describes the role of ESS on page 80 :

https://www.cvrd.ca/DocumentCenter/View/84184/MIECM-Emergency-Preparedness-Workbook---2017?bidId=

Although this describes a more extensive role than Thetis volunteers have dealt with (thankfully), all ESS volunteers are trained to register individuals and families in emergencies. This provides access to resources such as accommodation, food, clothing etc., and in some circumstances to aid in family re-unification after a disaster.

ESS Volunteers on Thetis Island are intended to help First Responders whose hands are already full by providing these support services. Although the major reception centers have staff that fill some ESS roles, ESS is largely community-based and volunteer-staffed.
Forbes Hall is a designated Emergency Reception Center that ESS opens when required and when a task # is assigned via Emergency Management.

Training is provided in advance by CVRD and can be acquired online through the Justice Institute, although in-person training is available from time to time.
Most Thetis Islanders are aware of the vital role our VOLUNTEER First Responders play and are reminded when heartfelt thank you’s are posted on E-spokes.

You might be the right person to help lighten the load by taking on ESS. It's not that scary. Definitely not as scary as fire-fighting.

If you can help, please contact April Diver at CVRD April.Diver@cvrd.bc.ca

Many thanks.

ThINC Nature House - Today's Activities - Friday, July 14

10:00 am - 12:00 pm Young Naturalists: Dive Demo & Critter Collection
(All ages welcome!)
Location: Telegraph Harbour Marina

Local marine extraordinaire, Andy Lamb will be leading a dive demonstration and critter collection at Telegraph Harbour Marina. Andy will first show us his dive gear and the process of getting ready to go underwater - including the importance of safety! We will then aid Andy in the collection of various (seaquarium friendly) species brought to the surface. Lots of buckets of cold water will be sloshing about! This event is exciting for all ages, and you never know what critters we might find!

2:00 pm - 4:00 pm Expert Excursions: Soil Walk with Ian Ralston (all ages)

Location: 412 Klahowya Road, Meadow Valley (meet on driveway)

We will visit a cut bank and learn about different soil profiles and their various uses. We will also explore soil texture sheets and learn about hand texturing soils. This program will give you the tools for considering sites for growing or building based on the soil characteristics. We will explore the vast world beneath our feet and begin to understand just how vital soil is for sustaining life. Come on down to learn about this integral part of all of our lives!

Local Art Show at Forbes Hall – Summer 2023

The TICA Art Committee is looking for art specific to Thetis Island for a display at Forbes Hall Community Centre. Do you own a painting of your cabin, foreshore, or perhaps a sketch of your dinghy on its pin, that you’d like to have included?

This show will be made up of loaned paintings or drawings of Thetis Island beaches, trails, forests, cabins, gardens, or boats at anchor. The loan of this artwork will be for the rest of the summer.

This display will be up in time for the Book and Bake Sale AND evening concert on Saturday August 6th. The art will be shown throughout the hall and will complement Deborah Martin’s paintings currently on display.

Deborah’s paintings are for sale with the proceeds benefiting TICA’s Back into the Black Debt Reduction Program.

If you are willing to loan artwork to be included in this show, please contact Ellen Rush at ellenrush@gmail.com or Carol Sowerby at sowerby@seaside.net  to arrange a drop off time at the hall.

ThINC Nature House - Today's Activities - Thursday, July 13

2:00 pm - 4:00 pm Wild Creatives: Hapa-Zome Printing (all ages)

Location: The Nature House at The Portal, 254 North Cove Road

Join Erica to do this fun craft, appropriate for any age interested! Hapa-Zome, literally meaning ‘leaf-dye’, is a Japanese printmaking technique that uses the natural pigments of leaves and flowers to make beautiful printed designs. This is done by smashing them into a fabric, usually cotton or linen. We will provide materials but feel free to bring any flowers and/or fabric you feel inspired to use.

6:30 pm - 8:00 pm ThINC Tank: Screening of Island of the Sea Wolves - Episode 2: Summer (youth, adults)

Location: The Nature House at The Portal, 254 North Cove Road

Join us for the second episode of Island of the Sea Wolves (2022)! If you missed the first episode about spring on the coast last week, no worries! You can join us for Episode 2 about the summer. This series explores the wildlife of the Vancouver Island coast and sheds light on the unique species of sea wolves that inhabit the coast. This documentary provides exceptional cinematography and insight into the world of the sea wolves. It will be followed by a discussion of the episode.
