Friday, July 7, 2023 at 7:17AM Weather Forecast
Outlook: Saturday to Monday:
For the weekend the warm, unstable convective pattern will continue as an upper trough persists just west of the Coast. Isolated, wet-ish afternoon thundershowers will continue over the higher terrain of Vancouver Island and the Mainland. Highs will be in the low 30s over the inland mainland and upper 20s over Vancouver Island. Winds will be light SW inflow; afternoon Relative Humidity in the 20s over the Mainland valleys and 30s and 40s over Vancouver Island.
Monday should see a change as the trough is forecast to swing across Vancouver Island late in the day. This could produce more organized showers/wet thundershowers especially over the upper reaches of the inland mainland zones. Temperatures should cool to the mid to upper 20s and RHs will trend upwards.

Thursday, July 6, 2023 at 7:49AM Reminder: Starting at 1 pm Thursday is the complete shutdown of all high-risk activities (mowing, chain-sawing, milling, excavating etc.) while we are in EXTREME FIRE HAZARD. Electric weed trimmers with plastic string are allowed, as are electric chainsaws used above ground where the chain will not strike a rock. Electric lawn mowers with metal blades are not permitted.
Propane campfire appliances are allowed, but no solid fuel fires.
Please report any smoke columns to 911. Let’s all hope this Extreme Fire Hazard period is short and uneventful.

Thursday, July 6, 2023 at 7:41AM Thank you to everyone who came out to count purple seastars (and eat seastar cookies) on Monday at Cedar Beach. Here are the final numbers (drum roll):
1,490 total purple stars Pisaster ochraceus of which only 14 showed wasting (0.012%)
21 mottled stars Evasterias troschelii and 11 leather stars Dermasterias imbricata.
This (purple star #) is an increase over the last count which is likely at least in part due to a larger group of participants, the use of flashlights and a somewhat lower tide. That said, it is almost certainly a lower number than the actual population because many specimens (particularly smaller juveniles) were simply not observable.

Thursday, July 6, 2023 at 7:39AM 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm Wild Creatives: The Soul of Trees (all ages)
Location: The Nature House at The Portal, 254 North Cove Road
Erica would like to invite you to a tree ring printing art day with Brazilian artist Marcia Aftimus on Thursday, July 6th. We are hopeful that our finished pieces will represent our interconnectedness with nature by showing our similarities with trees. We will be drawing, writing, and painting on our prints. Anyone of any age who is interested is welcome to join.
To check out some of Marcia’s beautiful works, see: www.marciaaftimus.com and examples of what you might create, see our blog post: https://www.thetisislandnatureconservancy.org/single-post/nature-house-week-1-events-july-3-9
6:00 pm - 8:00 pm ThINC Tank: Screening of Island of the Seawolves (youth, adults)
Location: The Nature House at The Portal, 254 North Cove Road
Join us for a documentary screening of the first episode of Island of the Sea Wolves (2022)! This series explores the wildlife of the Vancouver Island coast and sheds light on the unique species of sea wolves that inhabit the coast. Join us to view some exceptional cinematography and gain some insight into the world of the sea wolves. It will be followed by a discussion of the episode.
