The People’s Apothecary Garden has been tucked in for another winter. Thank you to all who came out for yesterday’s PAG event, and a special thanks to all of our 2022 PAG volunteers: Jan, Liz, Ellen, Sahir, Carol, Mark, Rob, Jim, David, Steph, Chandler, Ann, Noan, Mila, Liam, and the Thetis Island School gang. Your help with weeding, harvesting, pruning, and mulching most definitely helped ‘make light work’, and it’s been a joy working alongside and learning from you.
New plants and seeds are in the ground and are getting adjusted to their new neighbourhood - thank you Nan, Ann, John, and Jutta for your leafy contributions.
Next year you can expect a few new educational additions to the garden: an info panel about the PAG and a deck of laminated plant knowledge cards, which will provide some information on each medicinal plant, its properties, and how to use them.
Thanks once again!
Charlotte
It’s that time of year! If you have a mason bee house, it’s cleaning time!
Mason bees, and other solitary bees such as leaf cutters, are one nature’s best pollinators. They are docile, easy to care for, and are critical pollinators for food and ecosystems. Mason bee houses promote mason bee action and pollination, but without the proper care, they can be detrimental to the population. Mason bee houses are akin to farming where close quarters can encourage the spread of disease, mold, and parasitic / predatory species that can wipe out your solitary bees and be damaging to the wider population. But this can be mitigated by cleaning your mason bee house every fall and storing the little bugs until spring.
Tomorrow, Tuesday, Nov 1st at 1:30 pm, Suzanne Sarioglu will be showing me how to clean out ThINC’s mason bee house, located at the Pollinator Garden. If you’d like to pick up some tips on bee house management, join us at the Nature House (The Portal, 254 North Cove Rd). Please park at Heneage House (first red/purple building as you come down the driveway).
In the meantime, listen to this informative interview with Thyra McKelvie on hosting solitary bees: https://www.motherearthnews.com/podcast/solitary-bees-zepz2203ztil/
Best,
My thanks to those who came out Sunday and helped themselves to the fir planks from our demo’d sundeck. But it is a big pile, so there is still lots left.

Hello, the annual PAG Appreciation Event is today - and yes, it just so happens to be the wettest day of the week. As long as it isn't torrential rain and hurricane winds, we will be there with hot apple cider waiting for you (if you can, please bring your own mug)!
To get an idea of how the space has grown, here is the photo album from 2020:

And 2021-22:

Hope to see you there,

The fire hall will be spookily welcoming of little ghosts and goblins, pirates and princesses from 6 pm to 7 pm where the fire engine is normally parked.
Friends and neighbours are invited to come by and have a coffee and share their treats as well.
Monday, 6 pm to 7 pm inside the truck bay where you won't get wet and it won't be too spooky for the tiny tots.--

Starting November 1st (Tuesday) permits will no longer be required for campfires and Category 2 outdoor burn piles (yard waste) and incinerators. All yard waste burning must comply with the Category 2 fire regulations and the Ministry of Environment Venting Index must be consulted prior to ignition.
Category 3 fires (land clearing piles) must have a Provincial Registration Number in place and the TIVFD must be notified of that number before lighting the fire, and also must follow the Smoke Venting Regulations
The Venting Index link is
Or go to the TIVFD website and follow the venting index link.
For a Provincial Registration Permit for land clearing fires, go to
https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/safety/wildfire-status/fire-bans-and-restrictions/ofts-burn-registration and email or phone the Ministry of Forests.
The Venting Index must be followed because we are in a High smoke sensitivity zone and outdoor, smoke-producing fires may be lit only when the Venting Index is marked GOOD for that day.
No garbage, hazardous materials, or burning of construction materials is permitted at any time. For a complete list of outdoor burning regulations for BC, go to
Please remember that we all share the same airshed and if you must burn, do it responsibly.

Just demo’d a sundeck and have lots of fir 2x6 planks 6 to 8 feet long that could be cut up for your wood-burner this winter. Painted with water-based paint on one side. Help yourself to as much as you need.
121 Clam Bay Road—use the gate at the side of the yard at the foot of CBR near the path to the beach.
