Summer 2023 ThINC Nature House Program - Starting Soon!

Hello Thetis Islanders,

ThINC's summer Nature House program will be up and running again, starting next week! Other than the Monday sea star count on July 3rd, the program takes place every Wednesday - Sunday until August 27th. Details about each event will go out at the start of each week on eSPOKES and on our ThINC blog.

There's something for everyone:

Harvest Hours at the PAG (People's Apothecary Garden) - Includes drop-ins and harvesting, as well as garden and medicinal plant related workshops (Wednesdays and Sundays)

Wild Creatives - nature inspired arts/crafts for all ages (Thursdays)

ThINC Tank - an evening media and discussion series (Thursdays)

Young Naturalists - our junior science program, previously known as Junior Biologists (Fridays)

Expert Excursions - community led science/sustainability walks/talks/workshops (Fridays)

Seaquarium Drop-in at the Nature House - learn about the denizens of the underwater world off the shores of Thetis Island by exploring our seaquarium (Saturdays)

S4 (Sensational Sunday Speaker Series) - guest speakers from a wide variety of environmental, cultural, and sustainability disciplines (Sundays)

Also! For anyone wanting a ThINC t-shirt, or to learn more about our programs, drop by the Howling Wolf Market every Saturday between 10-2 and say hi (we are the blue tent!).

To see our July calendar, see here: www.thetisislandnatureconservancy.org

For details about Week 1: July 3 - 9, see here: www.thetisislandnatureconservancy.org/single-post/nature-house-week-1-events-july-3-9

Things to keep in mind for this summer's Nature House program:

1. Parking: For events taking place at The Portal, 254 North Cove Road, please park at the Fairyslipper Forest parking area or at Heneage House, the first red building you'll meet on the driveway and walk down to the Nature House. There will be lots of signage!

2. Sheep: We also have lovely sheep neighbours around The Portal, but please do not feed them anything and do not touch the electric fence. The shock is not a fun zap, but a painful shock! Stay safe!

3. Supervision: Kids under 12 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

If you are keen to participate in our Nature House program, sign up for a Nature House membership here: www.thetisislandnatureconservancy.org/get-involvedFor an additional $20, you can become a member of ThINC, which helps to support our programs and projects.

Mosquitoes Ideas / Control / Protection

I have heard of 2 methods for mosquito control.- in the West Kootenays they used an environmentally safe foam to cover the mosquito eggs in ponds.- in Winnipeg they release dragonflies in their parks when necessary.

Don’t know any more than that.

P. McCarten

I read in a forum online that Johnson's baby creamy oil with aloe and vitamin E helps with them. I bought a bottle from Amazon and we cover ourselves with it, hair, ears and all exposed skin. I find it lasts only an hour or two before a second coat is needed. It's not perfect but they don't bite nearly as bad than without it(they still buzz around so we add more around then). I'm not sure how many babies are sacrificed to make it but sure is worth the cost.

We put some on Pepper too but only where she can't lick it off herself. For her we bought an essential oil cream that 5-drops goes onto her collar for tick control every 5 days. As long as we remember it works well also. We buy it at Krazy Kritter Kookies at the Chemainus market.

Ralph Smith

Can we introduce frogs to the standing bodies of water / or lakes? Some natural ways to control mosquitos:

1. Marigolds

Beyond their beautiful and vibrant coloration, the scent that marigolds release make them a great natural mosquito deterrent. They're also known to keep away other insects that can damage your other plants, making them especially helpful for gardeners or people who like to grow some of their own food.

Plant some marigolds in your yard, either from a starter plant or from a seed, and start solving your mosquito problem and beautifying your home simultaneously.

2. Citronella

While largely produced in Asia, the citronella plant is a well-known mosquito solution among southern homeowners. This clumping grass emits a strong scent that's quite effective for mosquito and other insect control, and its natural properties have made it a common ingredient found in several insect repellants.

The herb has also been used in many other ways, such as a perfume or as a way to calm barking dogs. It has even had success as a spray to keep pests from destroying furniture and other household valuables, meaning that homeowners that invest in citronella plants for mosquito protection may be able to glean several additional benefits.

Citronella can be planted in a large pot, or used as an ingredient in candles or torches.

3. Catnip

While, as the name implies, catnip is more widely-known for its effect on cats, it nevertheless serves as a potent mosquito repellant. A close relative to the mint plant, catnip, like citronella and marigolds, releases a scent that mosquitoes can't stand, deterring them from approaching.

Unfortunately, catnip only works well as a repellant if the mosquitoes are in close proximity to the plant, meaning that you probably won't be able to protect your entire yard with just this plant. However, the oil in catnip can work wonders when applied to the skin, acting as a natural bug spray. Catnip is also very easy to grow and maintain, making it easy to keep a steady supply.

Just remember how intense the effect of catnip is on cats, and how powerfully they are attracted to it. You don't want to replace one pest with another in the form of unwanted felines on your property.

4. Dragonflies

Why not use a helpful insect to fight a harmful one? In the realm of animals that help maintain mosquitoes, dragonflies are among the most unique. Dragonflies consume a lot of mosquitoes, but sometimes even with the large amount they ingest, they may not seem to to have a significant impact on the problem.

However, their real strength is less in stopping an existing mosquito infestation and more in preventing them in the future. Dragonflies do consume adult mosquitoes, but they have a much greater impact on mosquito larvae. Mosquitoes lay eggs in bodies of standing water, which dragonflies will happily eat up before they have a chance to grow into adults.

5. Frogs

Unlike dragonflies, frogs in their tadpole stage do not do much with eliminating mosquito larvae. Even though they may share the same space, tadpoles primarily eat plants and algae until they mature into adults. However, once they are mature, frogs love nothing more than to eat pesky mosquitoes.

Just remember that adult frogs consume all sorts of insects, so they may not focus solely on your mosquito problem if other food sources are present. Likewise, the quantity of food they consume means that frogs alone will not be enough to eliminate a serious mosquito problem.

That said, frogs are still an easy and environmentally-friendly way to help make a mosquito problem more manageable.

6. Bats

Bats feed on the insects that are the most dangerous to humans, namely mosquitoes, and the ones that cause the most damage to crops, such as grasshoppers, rootworms, beetles, and so on.Their diets, combined with their excellent hunting skills, make them an incredibly important part of Georgia's ecosystem.

Like frogs, this means that introducing bats into the woods near your home can help protect you from a number of harmful pests in addition to mosquitoes. Unfortunately, this also means that, like frogs, bats alone are generally not enough to fully eliminate a mosquito population - but they can be a tremendous help, especially for mosquitoes that are more active at night.

Mosquito Infestation on Thetis

I have to concur with Kathleen M. who also e-Spokes about the mosquito infestation on our island. I didn’t think the situation could be worse this year than last year, but it is insane. I get swarmed all day, not just in the early morning or evening. I’m even using mosquito repellent that I used on safari in Africa, and they are still swarming. We have no standing water on our property, no tall grass and yet they are everywhere! I just spoke to Steve from Antex and he has no solution, but did agree that this is a huge issue on Thetis. He’s been getting calls from Thetis residents regarding this too. Also, our chimney cleaning guy who comes over every year cannot believe how bad the mosquitos are here. He said this is Thetis specific. There must be something we can do as a community.
