Mosquitoes 

We have discovered an effective protection against mosquitoes. It's a device called 'thermacel' available at Canadian Tire. It consists of a small butane heat source that activates a mat that's impregnated with insecticide and emits a vapor barrier of 15 feet. Effective indoors or out with no odor. One model is designed for carrying on walks (on a backpack); another for placing on a flat surface. You turn them off when not needed, and they run for 12 hrs. Refills are available. It's a game changer. They sell for about $30.00.

Mosquito Challenge 

While I am all for "biological warfare" in this matter, I want to caution about potential introductions and making matters worse. Our native tree frogs should be encouraged but they are able to find ponds on their own. We have these delightful beasts in our pond along with dragonflies (also native) which no doubt lessens our problem here at Cedar Beach. However, the last thing we need is to introduce species which would cause collateral damage. The bull frog would be a disaster here on Thetis Island and so far, we have managed to avoid this problem. It is now a major issue on Vancouver Island where it was deposited many years ago.

Still Holding at High

We are still holding at HIGH Danger Class and are continuing with “early shift” hazardous activities. Quit working with your gasoline fuelled or metal-bladed equipment by 1 pm and then watch for smoke for the next two hours. It doesn’t look like there’s any rain in the forecast for the next week, so restrictions are likely to hold or possibly rise to EXTREME where all high hazard activities would be prohibited. Let’s hope we can continue to hold at HIGH and get our winter firewood in etc.

Update: Dangerous Goods Guideline For Hay

I wanted to share with you a reminder on Dangerous Goods guidelines specifically for Hay that we will be updating travellers on this week. Placards to identify the dangerous goods need to be consistently applied and as such we are sending a reminder out as well as reaching out directly to specific groups that we know travel often with hay to remind them of the Transport Canada regulation.

The Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act legally obligates customers transporting hay or straw to ensure the goods are safely and securely packaged and transported, and that they are identifiable through approved labelling.

The following steps must be taken when transporting hay on a BC Ferries vessel:

· A Dangerous Goods Shipping Document is required for hay regardless of weight or number of bales.

· Placards must be placed on the outside of the vehicle carrying the hay if the total weight is 500 kg (1100 lb) or more.

· Hay must be secured within a closed vehicle, or the load must be completely covered with tarps to prevent random ignition.

· Loads that are wet, damp or contaminated cannot be transported on a vessel.

Dangerous goods regulations do not apply to unbaled or loose hay used for feed during transport or as bedding in a livestock transport unit. Drivers must declare all dangerous goods at the terminal ticket booth, through an attendant, or vessel officer.

Missing Milk Bottles!

Hello there Thetis Island milk subscribers. Every week we pay $2 on each
glass bottle we pick up and receive credit for what we return. Lately,
our return boxes are very empty, and we don't have a good way to track
who is returning or not. We just trust they come back to us when you
come to pick up your milk.

If you have a stash of bottles, please return to the kiosk or the farm.
If you lose or break a bottle, please let us know.

Catherine Korol

It is with sadness that the Unger and Korol families announce the passing of Catherine Korol on June 25, 2023. Bill and Catherine were long-time residents on Thetis Island. Catherine served as a First Responder on the Thetis Island Fire Department. She and Bill both enjoyed playing tennis, walking the cardiovascular hills and taking part in a variety of community activities. They loved their ocean side home and entertained family and friends from far and wide. The view inspired many of Catherine’s realistic oil paintings. She will be remembered for her smile, faith and the grace with which she carried herself through life.
