Jollity Farm Needs Your Help, and Especially Your Strong Arms (and Leaf Blowers)

We are nearing completion of our large irrigation pond repair project and need help on the last phase.

What it will require is many hands to hold the liner along every few feet as we slowly unravel and spread the new liner across the pond.

The strength will come in numbers, so you don't need any special skills or to be especially strong!

There are two possible dates, so please, if you are able to help, let us know what day is better for you. Sunday, Sept. 25 or Monday, Sept. 26. Start time TBA, but approx. 10:30-11.

We will provide BBQ lunch following.

Leaf blowers are needed to help push air under the liner as we spread, so please let us know if you have one to lend or can bring along with you.

It is a big ask, but this is a big and important project to wrap up before the rains begin, so THANK YOU in advance!!

Please let us know if and when you are available.

Election Preparation

All candidates for any office wishing to reach voters on Thetis Island in the upcoming elections may submit ads of their plans to eSPOKES.

Guidelines for eSPOKES, approved by TIRRA:

Long items (over 300 words) and pictures should be posted elsewhere, and a link provided. Discussion or opinion pieces cannot be included but links to them can be posted. Similarly, candidate statements should be a link to the information. When possible, the organization conducting the election should do a single post with a list of links.

Information about voting procedures can also be posted.

Please remember that clarity and brevity are the most effective communicators.

We encourage all those who volunteer at “Soup’s On” and other Food Service Events, as well as those who would like to join this energetic and fun team, to attend this year’s “Soup’s On” Start Up Meeting, which will also include information for those who want to help with other Food & Event Services.

All sorts of skills are looked for – cooks, prep cooks, servers, dishwashers, set-up, take-down and helping others, even decorating!

What’s Happening at Forbes Hall?

On Sat Sept 17, there were 27 participants for the Food Safe-1 course and all passed the exam. Thanks go to the Thetis Island Community Fund for their sponsorship of this class. Next, 25 islanders attended the very informative and lively CVRD Cowichan Internet and Cellular Connectivity Workshop.

Coming up this week at Forbes Hall:

Monday 1 pm:  The Soup’s On Start-Up meeting is being held (yes! It’s that time of year!) and will be followed by a kitchen and beverage station orientation.

Wed 10 am: There will be a General Orientation for anyone using the hall for meetings, activities, classes or events. This presentation will include opening and closing the hall, expectations while using the hall and basic beverage station protocols.

Wed 11 am: Kitchen and Beverage station orientation for all those providing food at Forbes Hall through the use of these two facilities.

Thursday 1 pm: a second General Orientation will be held (same as Wed 10 am) for those who couldn’t attend the first.

Saturday 10am – 1pm and Sunday 1 – 4pm: our lovely Library welcomes you with an attendant on hand. Come for a visit and browse the shelves. Ideas and conversation welcomed.

Sunday Afternoon – Meet & Greet with Jesse McClinton who is running for CVRD Area G Director.

Reminder that the library is always open after 10 am when there is an activity scheduled and the hall is open. There is a calendar posted on the bulletin board by the library listing the current activities for the week. You may find one you would be interested in attending.

Hope to see you all this coming week.

Islands Trust Candidate message

Hello Islanders,

My name is Peter Luckham, I am one of the currently elected Islands Trust Trustees for the Thetis Island Trust area. Many of you know me from my 34 years living on the island. There are also a fair number of you who are new to the island, and we may not have had the opportunity to meet. This message is an invitation to all of you to meet and discuss Islands trust and to seek your support on Election Day.

In keeping with what appears to be a Thetis Island tradition of light campaigning, I will not be posting placards or going door to door and intrude on your privacy. However, I would be pleased to receive invitations from individuals, families and small groups if you would like me to come and knock on your door for a conversation. Over the next few weeks, I plan on spending time outside our community centre to provide drop in opportunities.

It is possible I will also host a zoom meeting if there is an interest to meet for a virtual dialogue.

If anyone on the island would like to organize an all-candidates’ debate, I would be available. Typically, such events are organized by non-partisan groups. Let me know so we can figure out a time and date that suits all the candidates.

I will be attending Trust Council October 20-22, and plan to start my campaign discussion opportunities on Friday September the 23rd. I am setting the following dates for drop-ins and will be available by appointment on most other days leading up to the election for discussions or meetings with you.

Friday September 23rd 11:00 to 1:00

Saturday September 24th 10:00 to 2:00

Wednesday September 28th 11:00 to 1:00

Friday September 30th 11:00 to 1:00

Saturday October 1st 10:00 2:00

Tuesday October 4th 4:30 to 6:30

Thursday October 6th 11:00 to 1:00

Saturday October 8th 10:00 to 2:00

Monday October 10th 4:30 to 6:30

Thursday October 13th 10:00 2:00

Saturday October 15th, Election Day.

Please phone or email me to arrange a visit to your home for a door knocking engagement. 250-252-0758 or VA7DVR@gmail.com

Ride Needed to Nanaimo Sept 25

My friend is looking to catch a ride to Nanaimo on the 2:50 or the 4:45 ferry from Thetis on September 25. She would walk on the Thetis ferry and would be happy to help with gas money.

Please let me know if you can help out by emailing me: carolinecarncross@live.com.

Thanks!

Caroline
