Yard Waste Fire Ban In Effect

As of May 15th (last Monday), no permits were being issued for yard waste fires on Thetis Island.  Please report all daytime smoke column sightings to 9-1-1.

Campfire permits are still being issued for small (regulation size <18”) evening campfires.  Do not light a campfire in windy conditions.  Have a water source available and shovel etc. and always supervise the campfire; extinguish thoroughly.

This is also a good time to get out your CSA certified propane campfire appliance and check that the hose and fittings are in good working order.  When a campfire ban goes into effect later this season, propane campfire appliances are normally still allowed and do not require a fire permit.

FireSmart

Scotch Broom is an invasive noxious species and poses a significant wildfire risk for our island. Test burns have proven that these plants are especially volatile due to the high oil content and dead material that accumulates under the healthy and old plants. When left to spread, Broom grows rapidly crowding out native plant regrowth.

Cut Broom now as it is more vulnerable when in bloom. Cut at ground level as not to expose the stem is preferred, leaving the roots to die in the heat of the summer. Each plant eliminated is up to 18,000 future seeds that have been denied the opportunity to spread. This simple task will undoubtably protect our community and lessen a potential wildfire.

Partial Trail Closure

Due to considerable flooding close to the Kenwood end of the Lawrence (Community) Trail which has created a dangerous situation, this end of the trail will be temporarily closed.

We are hoping to arrange a detour around the flooding in the very near future. As soon as the situation is resolved, we will let you know, and you can resume your travels on the Lawrence (Community)Trail.
