Christmas Market - December 3rd from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm at Forbes Hall

Break out the glue sticks!  Sharpen the saw blades!  Put on your apron and get ready because it’s time to start thinking “Christmas Market”!

Yes, the Christmas Market is back in the Hall this year and we’re looking for vendors.  What crafty skills have you got up your sleeve?  Do you do woodwork?  Bake?  Knit?  Sew?  Carve?  Paint?  Draw?  We’d love to have you join us.

If you have questions, you can contact Eleanor Vandergaag at roneleanorv@gmail.com .

More information will follow, but in the meantime, start planning what you could add to this fun social event.

Thetis Still in EXTREME Hazard Fire Rating

BC Wildfire has been receiving a lot of flack about their decision to lift the campfire ban in the Coastal Region this week, and in our area, it is well deserved.  We continue to remain in EXTREME Hazard for activities near and in forested areas and continue with the High Hazard Activities ban.

I have just attended the Environment &Climate Change Canada (ECCC) video seminar on the present and forecasted weather patterns for the coming months, and the southern tip of Vancouver Island and more notably the Gulf Islands remain in this very dry pattern, and we are “susceptible to late season wildfire” as the autumn wind patterns increase.  This is not great news for us as we are expecting only very limited precipitation Friday/Saturday and the amounts might not be enough to move the needle down to HIGH yet.

For the extended forecast, we are going to be in a La Niña pattern again…the third time in a row and only the third Triple Dip La Niña on record.  This next month should be drier and warmer than average on the coast and then colder and wetter than average for November and December.  We are still at Drought Level 3 at this time.

If we get our big wind events in October this year, expect more power outages than the norm due to stress on the deciduous and coniferous root systems from the drought and the state of the canopy leaf cover.

Thetis & Penelakut Islands Community Connectivity Conversation

On September 17, the Cowichan Valley Regional District and Economic Development Cowichan hosted a session at Forbes Hall to discuss internet and cellular connectivity on Thetis and Penelakut Islands. We want to thank all those who attended for their interest and active participation in this project. Your feedback will help us create a Community Connectivity Plan that makes sense for Thetis and Penelakut.

The slideshow that was presented at the meeting is available to view here:https://ln5.sync.com/dl/2cba4f1f0/2er3fbz4-fj6hsq3z-c7ccpme6-g6w7zct8. You’ll also find more resources and videos on connectivity and our project on the website at https://www.planyourcowichan.ca/connect

With your feedback in hand, we will now work with our consultants from IBI Group to develop a Community Connectivity Plan for Thetis and Penelakut, which will provide recommendations for achieving improved connectivity on the islands. The plan will be shared with the community when complete.

If you have questions or additional feedback to share, please contact Economic Development Cowichan at edc@cvrd.bc.ca or 250-746-7880.

Need Trailer Transport

The fire department needs a trailer that can carry a 5600-gallon black water tank from Highway Rentals just this side of Duncan back to the side of Forbes Road, for a fire water storage tank project.  We will reimburse the ferry cost.  The tank is part of our ongoing suppression water storage project.

Contact firechief@thetisislandfire.ca if you can assist us.

Thank you.

Islands Trust Candidate Message

Hello to all residents and property owners in the Thetis Island Trust Area.

My name is Ken Hunter. I am announcing my candidacy for the position of Trustee in the upcoming election to be held on October 15th, 2022.

Many of you know me as a long time (70+ years) resident and past Trustee (2014-2018 term)

Perhaps some of the newer residents have seen me out and about heading to work as a self-employed building contractor.

If you are interested in a discussion about what the Trust has to offer, or, to discuss anything else "Trustworthy", please call or text me at 250 210-1498.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Thank you,

Ken Hunter

Post Office Parcels and Use of PO Boxes

First off Zola and I would like to thank all of you who have been so supportive of us in the running of the PO.  It has been much appreciated. It helps us enjoy our job.  I have only been at it for 3 months and Zola for about a month.  There is much more to learn but we are getting there.

Parcels
The tags we use for the parcels are what Canada post has given us.  They are light.  When you pull them out of the box you can lose them.  I have picked up a number on the ground at the PO boxes.  Please pay attention when you collect your mail to ensure you do not lose these tags.  We had a situation where someone came in and saw their parcel but had no tag.  A few minutes later someone else came in and said they found the tag on the ground.  Makes life a lot easier when you have the tag.  Remember parcel post can be from 3 days to 6 weeks before it arrives.  Regular mail the same.  If you do not know what you have ordered but you THINK you may have one, we will THINK it has not arrived.

Multi-use PO boxes
If you are one of many using the same PO box and do not want other addressee's picking up your mail then please let us know.  If you do not want others to pick up your mail, then we will put you in General Delivery and you can pick up your mail directly.  Otherwise whoever has that box for an address can pick up all of the mail unless we are advised otherwise.

Again thanks for all of the support and conversations.

Fred and Zola

Help Needed: PAG Today 9 - 11

Hello,

The PAG will be open today between 9 -11 am. As always, feel free to drop by to enjoy the space and/or harvest!

I am also looking for some volunteers to give me a hand laying the last of the woodchips, kindly donated by Jim Moloney, or helping to clean up the destruction, disorder, and chaos left in the wake of one hungry deer (it's actually not that bad)!

Many thanks,
Charlotte, Education and Stewardship Coordinator, ThINC
