Lion’s Mane Jellyfish info for Dog Owners

The season for Lion’s Mane jellyfish (Cyanea capillata) on Southern Vancouver Island’s east coast is primarily in late summer and early fall, from around August through mid-to-late September. This is when the jellyfish are most likely to wash ashore dead, making encounters on beaches more likely.

Humans can be injured by the toxins in the dead stingers (pain that can last for weeks) but the toxins can cause even more serious health problems in dogs, including severe muscle cramps and potentially deadly breathing issues. Other symptoms include vomiting, swelling, lethargy and drooling.

If your dog, like most dogs, curiously pokes at a dead Lion’s Mane on a beach walk and gets the jelly on its paws or legs or wherever, immediately rinse off with sea water (NOT fresh water) and seek veterinary care as soon as possible.

2026 Thetis Island Calendar Submissions

The Thetis Island Calendar will be produced once again!

For the 2026 edition, we’re looking for photos of native and naturalized flora and fauna, both aquatic and terrestrial, plus iconic geology. However, as in the past, we welcome all photos of Thetis.

Cut off for submissions is September 20, 2025.

Only photos 1.4 mb and larger will be considered, and submissions are limited to 8 photos per photographer.

The top 14 images will be chosen for the calendar, with another 20 being chosen for the gallery at the hall (these may be used for notecards). All selected images will be used with photographer’s credit included.

Upon submission of your photograph, you are allowing TICA to use it for the mentioned purposes, and for editing to be done correcting for use and printing.

The photographers of the chosen 34 photographs will be contacted that their photo has been chosen for either the calendar or the gallery.

Photos do not need to be taken in 2025.

Please submit photos to
info@forbeshall.ca by September 20, 2025.

Thank you in advance for supporting this fundraiser with your photographs!

Forbes Hall Health Services Group - Health Talk Series #1 - Dealing with Dementia

Thanks to a small grant provided to us by Our Cowichan Healthy Communities, we are able again to provide a series of community talks. Starting off our talks is a series on Dementia offered by Jane Hope of the Alzheimer's Association of BC. The first two talks will be in person, with the third being provided on screen.

On Wednesday September 17th, Jane will be providing two talks.

10:00am to 12:00pm – Getting to Know Dementia: Learn how dementia affects an individual’s brain and behaviour. General topics include different types of dementia, stages and progression and dispelling some common myths.

1:00pm to 2:30pm - Brain Health: It’s never too late to make changes for a healthier brain. Learn how to maintain or improve your brain health by exploring topics including natural aging changes, dementia, risk reduction, memory, brain training and more.

Note: a simple lunch will be provided for those who would like to stay at the hall for the afternoon talk, by reservation. See contact information below.

Third Talk: Friday, June 19th

10:00am to 12:00pm – Dementia Friendly Communities:
Islanders are invited to join Jane for an online meeting. Connection information to follow. This will be available in your own home, or at Forbes Hall.

Join us to learn more about dementia and explore simple strategies that can create a more supportive, inclusive and welcoming community for people affected by the disease.

The amount of people with Dementia is growing. It is estimated that over 770,000 people are currently living with Dementia in Canada and that number will grow to 1 million in the next five years. Please join our talks and learn about the nature of the disease, preventive steps and how to make our community welcoming to people dealing with the disease.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to me.

Needed: House for Rent in December

September is half over - soon it will be December. Is there anyone with a home on Thetis Island which will be vacant in December who would consider renting to a responsible young family? Our son-in-law is on Sabbatical this year, our daughter is working on her PhD, their sons are 9 and 7 years of age and they may or may not bring their medium-sized dog named “Scholar”.

If you are able to help us spend Christmas on Thetis Island and not drive to Edmonton, we would be ever so grateful.
Contact Grace Banks at 604-795-1118 (text or call).
