Nature House: What’s On Tomorrow

Coming up this Saturday, August 9:

10:00 AM - 2:00 PM Taste the Garden at Family Fun Day (all ages)

Location: Forbes Hall (outside)

Today we’ll be joining the Family Fun Day festivities! Drop by our table in front of Forbes Hall to discover the flavours, aromas, and hidden powers of nature in this hands-on activity. Decorate cookies with edible flowers and herbs from our medicinal garden - the People’s Apothecary Garden (PAG), then put your taste buds to the test with a blind tasting of herbal teas made from plants like lavender, chocolate mint, lemon balm, fennel, and rosemary. Can you guess which is which? Learn how these plants support health and well-being while having fun with the whole family!

1:00 - 3:00 PM Drop in at the Sea Life Centre (all ages)

Location: Telegraph Harbour Marina

You are invited to observe the otherworldly pile-worm burrowing in our non-touch tank. This clam seeking predator has powerful fangs made of zinc and four eyes, and was found in the intertidal at the marina. We will be doing a short feeding session to see its reversible jaws and learn about the distinct lifestyle of our earthworm related inmate. Finally, you can observe the distinctive undulating movement of the clam worm when walking, swimming, and burrowing.

Fire Danger Class & Weather Report

We have dropped down to HIGH DANGER CLASS and High-Risk Activities can again be undertaken until 1 pm and then a 2-hour fire watch posted. Please have water and tools at your site. No open solid fuel fires allowed. Propane campfire appliances are permitted.

Weather Forecast

SYNOPSIS:

After an unsettled Wednesday with rain and some thunderstorm activity, warm and dry conditions return. A low-pressure system continues to move east, and an incoming ridge of high pressure will shift a northerly flow to westerly through Thursday, giving most of the Coastal Fire Centre moderate WSW winds. Clearing will continue and mostly sunny conditions will return. Temperatures will be seasonal and will climb by 1-3 degrees each day into and through the weekend. This is a gradual build as this ridge is a slow-moving system. Expect clouds through the south into Friday morning and clearing by noon with a return to a SW flow over CoFC.

OUTLOOK:

Saturday to Monday: Very constant conditions for the weekend and start of next week. The ridge will continue to drive temperatures up and drying conditions remain. Temperatures peak Sunday through Tuesday with many areas above seasonal. A trough of low pressure in the northern portion of the province could create some elevated winds in the Tweedsmuir Park region on Sunday, gusting 30-40 km/h. To the south, gusting is expected through the valleys at 30-35 km/h.

Lost: iPhone 14 in a Clear Plastic Case

I lost my iPhone while kayaking at Pilkey Point. After arriving at the point, my kayaking partner and I left our vessels on the shore. I took my phone out of the kayak and placed it on the rocks before going for a swim. When I returned, the phone was no longer where I had left it.

If found, please contact me at 825-733-9291 or by email at marlower1@icloud.com.

Thanks in advance for your help,

Marlowe

Goosey Gander Shop closed for Fun Day, open Sunday

The Shop will be closed on Saturday, hoping to see you instead at Forbes Hall for the annual TICF Fun Day!

Sunday the Shop will be open again as usual from 10am to 4pm so that you can browse all the new things that arrived this week along with all the other bargains and one-of-a-kind items in the Shop.

Quite a few guy things came in, like an extra-large toolbox, a drill press converter, two antique metal machinists’ levels, a metal parts box with 28 drawers, an old heavy-duty pulley, and a square chimney brush. There’s a funky set of speakers and a downrigger too.

Lots and lots of really lovely new jewelry also arrived, a vintage picnic basket, avocado covers, and brand-new silicone reusable bags. Some charming salt & pepper shakers came in and trinket boxes too, a studded silver one, a wooden Norwegian hand painted one and an Italian hand painted alabaster hinged box. And for hours and hours of fun, some brand-new unopened jigsaw puzzles have arrived too.

Have a very Fun Day Saturday and all-around great weekend!

Thank you,

Nan Beals

TICF Family Fun Day, Saturday August 9th: Forbes Hall

Several things to note and help you plan your day!

  • No dogs (or other pets) on site.
  • No parking on the Forbes Hall grounds.

Lots of roadside parking in the vicinity, however, be mindful of traffic, lots of children expected, and of course we need to keep Mission Road passable for our Fire Department.

  • Tennis Court will be closed from Friday 3PM to Saturday 3PM to allow set-up and clean-up.
  • Bring your lawn chair for comfort and flexibility of seating.
