Thetis Island 2026 Assessments

After my notice went in the e-spokes last week, I heard from about 7 other property owners whose property assessments increased anywhere from 12-24%.

In our group discussion we identified discrepancies in how “comparables” were applied to justify these increases. In some cases, the land value went up but the building increased. Why?
We are going to come up with a template form letter that can be used by each individual property owner (with their own information) that wants to write to their local MLA or other official to complain.

I would encourage everyone who received an increase to their property assessment for 2026 to call the assessment BC office to query WHY the increase, and (most importantly) contest the increase by the Feb. 2 deadline by filling out the form on BC assessment website.

More Thick Than a Brick

Pond ice must be over 4 inches thick (10 cms) to support walking, skating etc. if it is clear ice. White ice (with snow/air) is weaker even at 4 inches.

A regular brick thickness is 3 5/8” (9 cms) if you want to compare.

Pond edge ice forms first because it's still, shallow, and exposed, but it's often weaker and more dangerous than thicker, clearer ice in the center, especially near inlets/outlets where water flows.

Cleaning Services & Childcare

Hi folks!

My name is Jade; my family and I are fairly new to the island. I’m currently a full-time online student studying to become an ECE, so I’m not working outside of school at the moment.

I’m offering house cleaning services for anyone who could use a little extra help keeping their home clean—especially if it’s been hard to keep up with lately. I’d truly love to help!

I also offer weekend childcare if anyone is interested in that as well :)

Available for weekly, bi-weekly, or one-time cleans.

Please feel free to message or email me for details :)

Thanks so much!

1 Month Sublet (Vancouver)

1 Month Sublet (Vancouver)

Hi all!

Aislinn here, if you don't know me, I'm Steph & Chad's daughter, I live over in the big smoke (Vancouver).

My partner & I are heading to Italy for a month soon and are looking for someone to sublet our place in the city for all or part of the time we're gone.

Will provide more details on the dates and pictures for anyone interested, but it's a very clean 1-bedroom basement suite in south van, just off Victoria Drive. Quiet neighbourhood with a park right out back, office space, big kitchen (+dishwasher). Preference to someone who can take the whole month, but part time would be $60/night (includes utilities.)

Just looking to keep it to islanders that we know, so no friends of friends, sorry! (If you've never met me but know Steph/Chad, that counts!)

Anyhow shoot me a text at 250 739 9573 if you want more info!

Cheers,

Aislinn

Forbes Hall Health Equipment Loaner Program (HELP): Volunteers Needed

Did You Know?

TICA provides a wide assortment of health equipment for islanders’ use. Everything from crutches to hold bards to wheelchairs are stored at Forbes Hall and lent out if needed. HELP is managed by the Forbes Hall Health Services Committee and headed up by chief HELP’er David Reay.

The equipment has been gathered over the years by the Thetis Island Volunteer Fire Department, the past Seniors’ Committee of TICA, and the Forbes Hall Health Services Group.

Can you help?

We are looking for two HELP’ers to work with David in loaning out the equipment and being on-site for returns and intakes of donated items.

What would the volunteer role look like?

Meet people at the hall, get them the appropriate piece of equipment for their needs and document the loan.

· Receive and process new donations.

· Document the return of loaned items and get them stored appropriately.

As this job would be shared by David and two other volunteers, the hours would be few, but you would be required to stay in contact with the HELP Group and attend to the program as needed.

Please contact either David Reay at davidreay@telus.net or Ann Dickie at info@forbeshall.ca

Looking forward to hearing from you,

Thanks
