Thetis Island Community Association: Forbes Hall Solar Project Fundraising Initiative

Through many generous donations and pledges from the Thetis Island community, we have met (and exceeded!) TICA’s $25,000 threshold to go ahead with the Solar Panel Installation on Forbes Hall, by Ocean Volt, in September 2025.

The excellent response in donations and pledges has funded most of the remaining cost of the project, for which we are very grateful!

 $63,211 (installation quote)

- 25,000 (BC Hydro Rebate)

- 36,600 (donations and pledges to July 31, 2025)

$ 1,611 (remaining to be raised)

The community initiative to make Thetis Island's Forbes Hall Community Centre greener and more affordable has now been realized through the drive and financial support of community members.

With sincerest thanks,

TICA Board

S4 Speaker Series (Sunday, July 3rd, 2pm @ Forbes Hall)

“Marine Endosymbioses: The Coolest Russian Nesting Dolls”

an exciting talk about the invisible and intriguing world of marine microbiology with Dr. Nicole Coots.

We will be exploring the evolution of plastids, and the endosymbiotic relationship that evolved from microbial organisms engulfing these photosynthetic organisms. This relationship has been around for billions of years and, in the present-day, takes many different forms in many different groups of microbial life. Dr. Coots will share her favourite examples of this crazy interaction and how it takes place in modern ocean environments. Get hands-on! Live protists will be available under microscopes so you can witness these ancient relationships in action.

About the Speaker:

Dr. Nicole Coots is a current post-doctoral researcher and marine microbial ecologist at the University of British Columbia. She obtained her PhD in Evolutionary Biology at Arizona State University in Phoenix, Arizona. Her research focuses on the evolution of plastids, specifically, a marine microbe called Radiolaria. These organisms perform endosymbiosis with diverse algae present in the open ocean. Though these relationships remain enigmatic to scientists, their study could reveal important implications in the world of marine ecology and biogeochemistry.

Spune'luxtth March for the Children – Monday Aug 4th

CVC News Article: https://www.chemainusvalleycourier.ca/local-news/spuneluxtth-march-for-the-children-set-for-aug-4-in-chemainus-8154552

All Thetis Islanders Invited to Participate

Hi Island residents,
Many of you have attended our first couple of Indigenous films. At the first film, Elder James Charlie was there to discuss the film, the impacts on him and our role in reconciliation as settler’s having the privilege of living here on his ancestral, and unceded, traditional territories.

When asked by an attendee of the film what the settlers could do for him and his people, other than respect for him and his story, he asked we attend the March on Monday in memory of the children who didn’t make it home.

Hope to see you there at 0830h at the Salish Sea Market.

I may catch the early boat to see if I can help out in some fashion.

A Distant Memory

For the last two years we have all been miserable over the number and voracity of the mosquitoes.

The unpleasant experience of feeling stalked and attacked by mosquitos, versus being only bothered briefly by their presence. A shout out is due, or overdue, to all those who worked on the slough: to fix the drainage and reduce the habitat of the salt water mosquitos.
And to all the property owners who took action....emptying water containing vessels and eliminating the breeding grounds in late spring.

Aren't we having a great mosquito free summer?
Thank you all!

Going to/past Langley?

If you are going to or past Langley in the Fraser Valley after August 10 (or know someone who is) and are willing to pick up a parcel for the TIVFD, please let me know.

We have an SCBA cylinder and backpack, and if we can save on the shipping, we would really appreciate the assistance. The package is not heavy and about a yard/metre long.

Please contact me at firechief@thetisislandfire.ca if you can help.

Thank you.
