Public Reminded to Exercise Extreme Caution

PARKSVILLE - The Coastal Fire Centre is urging the public to be extremely cautious with the use of campfires over the May long weekend. May has seen unseasonably dry thus far, and this has resulted in 26 fires with a total of 83 hectares burned within the Coastal Fire Centre: all are suspected to be human-caused.

The current prohibitions do not ban campfires or cooking stoves that use gas, propane or briquettes within The Coastal Fire Centre. A reminder to the public about campfire safety and responsibilities are as follows:

•          No larger than 0.5 metres high by 0.5 metres wide

•          Must have a fire guard around the campfire

•          Must have ready access to 8 litres of water or a shovel for the entire time the campfire is lit

•          Never leave the campfire unattended

•          Must be completely extinguished and ashes cool to the touch before leaving the area

A reminder that currently, there is a Category 2 and Category 3 prohibition in place throughout the Coastal Fire Centre, with the exception of Haida Gwaii. In addition, the following activities and use of the following equipment, materials and substances are currently prohibited:

•          Fireworks

•          Sky Lanterns

•          Burn Barrels or Burn Cages of any size or description

•          Binary exploding targets

•          Air Curtain Banners

Anyone found in contravention of an open-burning prohibition may be issued a violation ticket for $1,150, may be required to pay an administrative penalty of up to $10,000 or, if convicted in court, may be fined up to $100,000 and/or sentenced to one year in jail. If the contravention causes or contributes to a wildfire, the person responsible may be ordered to pay all firefighting and associated costs.

Human-caused wildfires are completely preventable and divert critical resources away from naturally caused fires. Always practice safe, responsible open fire use. 

To report a wildfire, unattended campfire or open burning violation, call 1 800 663-5555 toll-free or *5555 on a cell phone.

Chasing Down Veggie Starts

Hello gorgeous community!

I finally have access to a garden and so I am eagerly on the treasure hunt to find some organic/heirloom veggie/fruit starters! I'm keen to grow all things delicious so if you have some extras that need a good home (I will love them and then eat them with much gratitude!) - I would be happy to swing by and pick them up and pay for them as well! Don't be shy. I've seen all your greenhouses as I drive around the island! I'd also soooo love to track down some raspberries/blueberries etc. Maybe you have some that just aren't fitting in with the others. Send them my way!

Knitting Study

Hello! My name is Katharine and I'm conducting a knitting study for my Masters of Science at UBC.

The study takes 25 minutes and is conducted online, so you are welcome to take it at a time that is convenient for you. As compensation for participating in the study, you get to enter a raffle for one of five knitting prizes, valued between $30-$150 CAD.

All five prizes are made by Canadians and include two beautiful wool project bags, a worsted-weight yarn, a sock yarn set and a pair of knitting notions.

I am also giving away my first knitting pattern - the Pacific Crest Hat! The pattern is available at www.knittingstudy.com and can be downloaded for free as a token of my appreciation for checking out my study site.

The study is called StitchUp: Understanding and updating written knitwear patterns, and it looks at how knitters can use software to better understand their knitting patterns. It involves a survey and then working on two tasks in an online tool I created (25 minutes total).

I am conducting this study with Reid Holmes, the principal investigator.

Explore Thetis on your bike with the Tour de Thetis riders this Saturday 9 AM at the community hall. The friendly, non-race event is held the first and third Saturday of the month.

Riders of all fitness levels and the odd freeloader are treated to one of Fred's restorative cookies on return to the hall at 11 AM.
