National Volunteer Week - April 24-30, 2022

National Volunteer Week is Canada’s largest annual celebration of volunteers.

The theme for 2022, Volunteering Is Empathy In Action, Volunteers Bring Heart to Canada’s Communities, affirms the strong connection between volunteerism and empathy.

Let's celebrate the significant contribution of BC's almost 1.5 million BC volunteers who dedicate over 114 million hours to help others. Thetis Island volunteers, Penelakut Island volunteers and the rest of the Cowichan Valley are no exception to the vast and varied contributions of one time, sometime, ongoing event, & project volunteer efforts.

Empathy is a quality that can help people relate to others and build awareness around different experiences. It connects people in ideas and actions and helps create bonds forged in common goals and aspirations. Volunteering can help us develop empathy, to see the world through the eyes of others. It can connect people from diverse backgrounds and life experiences, expanding our views. It can build our capacity to work collectively and contribute to a vibrant, inclusive society. From coast to coast to coast in formal and informal settings, volunteers create caring, collaborative, and compassionate communities.

During National Volunteer Week 2022, we celebrate the contributions of Canada’s millions of volunteers: their actions, their understanding, and their genuine concern for the world around them.

Volunteering, putting empathy into action, can build communities where people feel happier, healthier, and more welcome – creating a stronger, more connected Canada

Many thanks for all you do!!

Thank you to the First Responders

I’m writing this from my hospital bed in Victoria so hope it comes across correctly.

Last Sunday morning, climbing out of bed I started to gasp for breath as soon as I stood up and tried to walk, I laid back down and it was easier to breathe, stood up, same thing, I tried this several times, something not right here. Dialled 911, Chad was at my front door within minutes with all other responders there minutes later. They could see I needed oxygen, like right now ! They were all so calm, so skilled, so caring. Arriving at Duncan hospital I practically went straight for tests. After X-rays and all other tests, you can possibly imagine. A doctor came to see me and said “ If we don’t get you for surgery in Jubilee tonight, you’re going to die”

I had CT scans, more X-rays, you name it, I had it.

Everyone had a part of saving my life last Sunday, from first responders thro 2 hospitals to my surgery. Call Sunday morning, surgery 3.00 am Monday morning. I have a 7 cm round tumor attached to my lung and pneumonia to boot.

Radiation starts Monday. Far from out of the woods but because of teamwork I get to at least fight this .

Thank you to our first responders!!!!  THE BEST !!!

Thanks for listening.

RCMP Event Information Recap

Thank you to the 30 community members who attended the RCMP Fireside Chat on April 20th at Forbes Hall.

Link: RCMP Visit Information Recap

As part of the visit, there was a visit to Thetis Island Elementary School (TIES). Sarah Lucchetti (TIES K to 7 Teacher) provides the following recap:

Sergeant Olsen paid a visit to our students at Thetis Island Elementary as well. Students were happy to engage in conversation and asked all sorts of questions about what it's like to be a police officer, the kind of tools he carries, interesting cases he's worked on, police dogs, and more. The kids very much enjoyed their visit and were left with some ideas to ponder, as well as some police stickers and tattoos!
