Looking for Apples

I know this year isn’t great for apples but if anyone has apples on their tree and they’re not going to use them, I’d be happy to come pick them.  Hoping to make apple butter this fall.  Email  nmduncan@shaw.ca

Thanks

ThINC Nature House: Saturday, Aug 6

10:00 am start: Map the Portal with Liam Irwin at the Nature House (all ages)

Drones, Lidar, and mapping are the focus of this workshop and will be utilized to make a virtual 3D model of the Portal! A demo drone flight will collect images from above and be compiled together to create a model of the area. Liam will introduce the science of remote sensing and show example 3D models of Moore Hill and other Thetis Island sites, exposing their unique topography! Liam will discuss the use of these tools in ecology, forestry, and beyond. We will also have a kid’s mapping activity and treasure hunt!

ThINC Nature House - Friday, Aug 5

2:00 pm start: Junior Biologist - Sealightful - at the Nature House (kids 8-12)

This week’s focus is sea life! - we will start with exploring the seaquarium and touch tank, and then we will go down to the ocean and explore the intertidal sea life! We will observe and learn about the seaweed, barnacles, oysters, sea stars and much more. We will finish the day with a sea life inspired craft, come on down for a fun day of ocean exploration and curiosity.

Also - in PAG News: There are a few bunches of yarrow (Achillea millefolium) hanging outside the People's Apothecary Garden that people are welcome to take! Its scientific name derives from the word "Achilles", the Greek demigod, who legendarily carried yarrow with his army in case of severe trauma. This is primarily due to its haemostatic properties, but it is also a powerful painkiller and can alleviate digestive issues and toothaches.

Thank you, Ellen Cerny, for making these bundles!

Just two final details:

- Parking will be exclusively on the Mission Road shoulder and in the school parking lot to keep the Forbes Hall parking area open and safe during the day’s events.

- Free up some space in your change jars and bring some loonies and toonies (or smaller coins) in order to have a chance at soaking a willing participant in the Thetis Island version of a Dunk Tank. All other games are free. All denominations will be accepted for the $10 BBQ with change available.

Yellow Weather Warning

Yellow weather notification for British Columbia. A ridge of high pressure is building over B.C. this weekend and will bring a short period of heat. Heat Warnings are possible for parts of the coast, Southern Interior and possibly Central Interior, but not likely for the entire area as temperatures are marginal for this event. Heat Warning criteria may be met as early as Sunday, August 7th. The hot spell seems to end Wednesday or Thursday (August 10 or 11th) after which there is a likelihood of thunderstorms over southern B.C. The hot and dry weather will bring a risk of heat related illness and increased fire danger. Lightning from thunderstorms that follow the heat event may increase the potential of new wildfire activity and gusty winds from thunderstorms may further enhance the spread of wildfires.

The TIVFD asks that you keep a lookout for smoke columns and report sightings to 911.  Campfires have been prohibited everywhere except Haida Gwaii at this time.  We are still in HIGH Hazard rating but this may change over the weekend.  Proceeding with an abundance of caution, you can still work with spark producing machinery (mowers, chainsaws etc.) in grass or forest before 1 pm provided you set a two hour fire watch afterwards.
