Cowichan Connectivity Strategy Presentation, March 22

Good afternoon, everyone,

We’re reaching out today because you have previously participated in the Cowichan Regional Internet & Cellular Connectivity Strategy project. The project aims to provide a better understanding of the state of internet and cell phone connectivity in the region, and a strategy to meet our connectivity needs long into the future. The project has also resulted in Community Connectivity Plans for 4 underserved communities: Cowichan Station, Thetis and Penelakut Islands, Ditidaht First Nation, and the Cowichan Lake Region. 

CVRD staff from Economic Development Cowichan and consultants from IBI Group will be presenting the final reports from the project at the CVRD Committee of the Whole meeting on March 22 at 10:30am. The meeting agenda and reports are available to view here: https://cvrd.primegov.com/Portal/Meeting?meetingTemplateId=3705. Once you’re on the website, click on R1. Report from the Economic Development Division and the report links will appear. 

If you would like to watch and/or participate in the meeting, there are several options:

The Songbird of Vienna - a little taste of the story

As everybody knows by now, I will be performing The Songbird of Vienna at the SOAS Spring Recital on Friday, March 24th.

My show is a story told in verse.  There is no singing in my show!  The songbird of the title is certainly not me.  I'm a horrible singer.

But here is a taste of the story:

It's the late 1800's in Vienna, the glittering capital of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Famed as a musical powerhouse, the city has been home to such spectacular talents past and present as Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert and Strauss. Hopeful young composers flock there but not all of them find success. One of the unlucky is Franz. Having given up, his dreams crushed, Franz is waiting for a coach to take him back to his hometown when he discovers a baby bird in distress. He rescues this tiny spark of life. One thing leads to another and through this small act of kindness his fortunes change. Luck, hard work and inspiration, love, friendship and confidence all play their roles on the way to a happy ending.  

This is a story for anyone who has ever felt the joy of rescuing an animal and seeing it thrive - and it's a story for anyone who has ever dreamed a dream and tried to make that dream come true.

Sunbeam Heated Blanket Recall due to Fire Hazard

According to the Health Canada notice, the recall involves the Sunbeam Queen Size Heated Blanket with the model number 32810027, of which more than 18,000 units were sold in Canada. 

Per Sunbeam, the recall covers the Sunbeam Ultra Lush, Royal Luxe and Royal Posh Heated Blankets in the queen size. Consumers can find the model number on the blanket's wash label, the company says.  

The blankets were sold with detachable controllers in the colours, ivory, beige, light green, light blue, dark blue, burgundy, dark grey, light grey and grey violet, according to Health Canada.

Time to Ride your Bike!

The Tour de Thetis bicycle ride on Saturday starts (just after 9 a.m.) at the community hall. The free informal ride is for fun and fitness. Not a race, it's for people of all ages on traditional or e-bikes. The original course is 30 km, but first-timers may want to start late or take some short-cuts. 

A highlight is the recovery and social time, featuring Fred's home-made cookies, at the hall at 11 a.m.

Green Energy Grant

Dear Neighbours,

Have you heard about the Canada Greener Homes Grant?
The grant provides up to $5,000 in funding to homeowners for energy-efficient home upgrades, including insulation, air sealing, and the installation of high-efficiency heating and cooling systems. Additionally, homeowners may be eligible for up to $600 for an energy assessment to identify areas of their home where improvements can be made.

We’ve taken the first steps in applying for the grant:

1. Ensure your Thetis property is your primary address (on your driver’s license)

2. Apply online. See link here.

3. Have a licensed Energuide Home Evaluation done at your home. 

We’ve already booked our evaluation for Friday April 14th in the morning. The cost to just have them come to the island is $350. However, if you’d like to get your home inspected on the same day, we can split the cost(s). They have room in their day for 3-4 appts.
