May 14th Fire Service Memorial and Celebration of Life

The Fire Service Memorial and community Celebration of Life  for Pete Rees will take place at 2 pm on Saturday, May 14th at Forbes Hall community centre.

As many of you know, Pete was the founding Fire Chief of the TIVFD, a task he took on after 29 years of fire service with the Vancouver Fire Department. We are proud to honour his life and memory with this fire service tradition.

Active TIVFD members, retired TIVFD members, active TIVFD Auxiliary Support Team members, and other fire service members are welcome to join the procession behind the Honour Guard and Engine 1 as we march  to the flag pole at Forbes Hall for the traditional lowering and presentation of the flag.  Muster by 1:30 at the Fire Hall on Mission Road.

The community is invited to witness the flag ceremony at 2 pm at Forbes Hall and then make their way inside for Pete’s Celebration of Life with his family, neighbours and friends.  Retired TIVFD Fire Chief Ernie Hunter will MC the gathering and light refreshments will be served.  All are welcome.

Coffee lovers... don't miss a bean!

We have loved picking up or having our coffee delivered for all these years by Pot of Gold and shall miss it. Thank you so much Nan for keeping these farmers powered up for early mornings on the farm!

We are pleased to add ethically sourced, freshly roasted coffee beans from two of our favourite Vancouver Island family-owned businesses to the weekly delivery or farm pick up list.

Over the next year we are striving for zero waste (or as low waste as possible) with all the products we bring to the farm. Caffe Fantastico is on board with this initiative and willing to offer a refillable glass bottle program. Similar to how you've been receiving your milk and leaving your bottles for collection each week, fresh coffee beans will be packed the same way.

We had a hard time choosing between these roasters, so for a limited time we'll offer a wider selection so you can test them out and see what you like. For now, Drumroaster will be offered in compostable bags instead of the glass bottles. We'll be working on getting the same program going with them soon.

Head over to our refreshed website to view the order form with all the selections. For this week the cut off day/time for coffee orders is Wednesday by 3pm (for following weeks all orders are due by 9am every Tuesday morning)

National Volunteer Week - April 24-30, 2022

National Volunteer Week is Canada’s largest annual celebration of volunteers.

The theme for 2022, Volunteering Is Empathy In Action, Volunteers Bring Heart to Canada’s Communities, affirms the strong connection between volunteerism and empathy.

Let's celebrate the significant contribution of BC's almost 1.5 million BC volunteers who dedicate over 114 million hours to help others. Thetis Island volunteers, Penelakut Island volunteers and the rest of the Cowichan Valley are no exception to the vast and varied contributions of one time, sometime, ongoing event, & project volunteer efforts.

Empathy is a quality that can help people relate to others and build awareness around different experiences. It connects people in ideas and actions and helps create bonds forged in common goals and aspirations. Volunteering can help us develop empathy, to see the world through the eyes of others. It can connect people from diverse backgrounds and life experiences, expanding our views. It can build our capacity to work collectively and contribute to a vibrant, inclusive society. From coast to coast to coast in formal and informal settings, volunteers create caring, collaborative, and compassionate communities.

During National Volunteer Week 2022, we celebrate the contributions of Canada’s millions of volunteers: their actions, their understanding, and their genuine concern for the world around them.

Volunteering, putting empathy into action, can build communities where people feel happier, healthier, and more welcome – creating a stronger, more connected Canada

Many thanks for all you do!!
