Noon Hour Supervisor

Dear Thetis community - Would you like to support the Thetis island elementary students? One hour has a much greater impact than you think!

As most of you know, I have been the educational assistant (former teacher assistant) at our one room school for the last five years. Aside from the teacher, myself, and the custodian, the school also employs a noon hour supervisor (NHS). The NHS supervises the students for one hour during which I take my lunch and coffee breaks together with the teacher. Currently the NHS position is being vacated, which means I have to perform those duties, and then take my breaks afterwards.

This has the following impacts:
-The teacher is left alone to instruct and supervise the students which is much more challenging in a multi grade school like ours.

-The students don’t get the full support from me.

-The teacher and I do not have that time to plan and collaborate, which affects our day to day instructions.

     - I know from experience that in the long run this has a very negative effect on everyone.
Please consider becoming either a full time, or even an on-call NHS.  ($25.50/hour, 11:30 - 12:30, qualifications: Grade 12 education, first Aid)

If you need a First Aid certificate, the Thetis island community fund has generously offered to pay the course and ferry costs to a successful applicant.

On behalf of our students, and with gratitude,
Simone Luckham

I have a temporary fix on the Post Office and its back in service.

I have 3 days worth of packages and parcels to catch up on and will try to get through all of them as fast as I can.

All post office services are active now.

Sorry for any inconveniences.

Lawrence Valley Loop Trail

We spoke too soon!

In a Monday work party, the trail committee discovered that the water in the meadow portion of the trail is over ankle deep.

The trail is therefore closed from the entrance at the Fire Hall to the Dingly Dell junction until the waters have receded.

Milk Containers Are Now Refundable!!

BC will now be accepting milk and plant-based beverage containers as a refundable container.  Along with the usual pop cans, wine bottles, beer cans, etc, TIPA is now prepared to accept these items at our Thetis Island Refundable container, next to the waste transfer yard.

At this time, the containers that are being accepted will be separated into two categories:

  • Milk and plant-based beverage cartons
  • Milk and plant-based beverage plastic jugs and containers

Items that are NOT part of the new program:

  • Whipping cream
  • Coffee cream or other coffee additives
  • Buttermilk
  • Drinkable yogurt
  • Infant formula
  • Dietary or meal supplement
  • Any dairy concentrates
  • Condensed or evaporated milk
  • Modified milk-derived products (e.g. kefir)
  • Yogurt, pudding, cheese, ice cream etc.

We kindly ask that you thoroughly rinse these containers, as they have to be handled by several people, often many weeks after they have been deposited.  Thank you again for supporting your local school students and enriching their education experience here on Thetis!

For more information about the new program see this link: https://recyclebc.ca/milk-plant-based-beverage-containers-join-deposit-system-feb-1/

Citizen Survey - and now please complete the Islands Trust Budget Survey (please note this is not from the Island's Trust)

Thank you for participating in the recent Citizen Survey on the Islands Trust Budget.

First, let me assure you that I am very aware of the need to protect your privacy and am reaching out to you only to share an update on the survey. If you do not want further correspondence, please opt out by replying this email address.

2 simple reasons for sending this:

-        To thank you and show you the results of the Citizen Survey.

-        To urge you to participate just as fully in the Islands Trust Budget survey (closes Sunday, February 6th, 11:59 p.m.)

-        https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/JM8KZLM

I think we can agree that together we have had a significant impact on the Islands Trust budgeting process.

-        The need for earlier consultation has been agreed by the trustees.

-        There was an extensive discussion at the Financial Planning Meeting (January 19th) about the format of the Islands Trust survey – both the questions and the layout of the financial information.

-        The Islands Trust Budget webinar (Jan 27th) was a new concept in engaging with the community.

However, the Islands Trust budget process is not complete yet for this year – we still have an opportunity to make sure that our message gets through clearly.

(Survey closes Sunday, February 6th, 11:59 p.m.)

Regards and thank you again for participating,

Mairead Boland

Citizen Survey Comments

I have attached a complication of all 327 comments (there were 544 respondents to the survey) so that you can re-use your comment if you would like. No names listed of course so you will have to scroll to find it – the date and island will help you – or email me back to find it for you.
