IEWG Will Be Hosting its 2nd Indigenous Film July 21, 2025

Thetis’s Community Assembly’s IEWG (Indigenous Engagement Working Group) will be hosting its second Indigenous film on July 21, 2025:

  • Held at the community hall in the evening
  • 1800h - 2000h
  • The film will be the 2nd feature of a 2-part series created by Peter Campbell of Gumboot Productions presents: Penelakut - Returning to the Healing Circle (2021) - Peter Campbell/Gumboot Productions.

July’s viewing is significant as we approach the March for the Children on August 4, 2025, not 5th as in my last post, starting at the Salish Market, Chemainus. This march commemorates the children lost at the Kuper Island Residential School and across Turtle Island.

Elder James Charlie will join us to welcome attendees to Forbes Hall and provide insights, as well as answer any questions the residents/guests may have after the viewing is complete.

Huy ch q’a siem, and I look forward to seeing you there.

Old Doorknobs and Locking Mechanisms

Your firefighters are training in Forcible Entry and need door locks/knobs for the Forcible Entry prop. They will be destroyed as we train, and every member wants a turn, so we need extra.
If you have changed out your door hardware and want to get rid some clutter in your workshop, please drop off your extra old door hardware at the front door of the firehall.
Thanks!

Reminder, Nature of Water Weekend July 26/27

Our island's water is a precious commodity. If wells get saltwater intrusion there is no easy or fast fix.

Here is a chance to learn from our neighbours about how to use and conserve water.

SATURDAY 26 July: Water System Tours

  • See various ways that Island residents collect and conserve water. Learn to read clues about groundwater from the landscape.
  • On site tours at:
  • 10:30 AM Matthias and Jutta Zapletal, 313 Forbes Road
  • 12:00 PM Mike and Shirley Harris, 237 Plateau Road
  • 1:30 PM Doug Fenton, 195 Pilkey Point Road
  • 3:00 PM Vicki Walker, 221 Pilkey Point Road
  • 4:30 PM Alex Rosewicz and Pauline Harwood, 217 Pilkey Point Road
  • 5:30PM BYO Picnic at the end of Pilkey Point!

Sunday 27 July: Learn About Groundwater

  • (Forbes Hall)
    • 1:15 - 2:15 Mike Harris - Thetis Island Geoscape and Groundwater: a Field Geologist's Perspective
    • 2:30 - 3:30 David Slade - Water Wells 101. All About Rural Wells, Pump Systems, Water Quality, Water Treatment, and Conservation
    • 3:45 - 4:45 Tobi Elliot - Freshwater Footprint: The Island's Trust's Water Balance Project on Gabriola Island

Road Safety Reward

Your Volunteer Fire Department and Telegraph Harbour Marina are pleased to announce we have partnered together to reward good road safety behaviour this summer.

If you are biking with a helmet and using proper arm signals, or you are walking safely on the correct side of the road, or even driving your vehicle and coming to a complete stop at our few stop signs and signalling your intention to turn, you might be stopped by a volunteer Fire Fighter who will hand you a card for a free ice cream cone at Telegraph Harbour Marina.

Thanks to all of you who already model great road safety behaviour. Our roads are busier, visiting drivers may be more distracted and not used to no shoulders, and rural driving at the posted speed of 50 kmph seems inconvenient to some.

Let’s share the roads safely. And perhaps we can share an ice cream cone with you.

TIVFD with Thanks to Telegraph Harbour Marina

Cedar Shakes Available

I have incredibly large piles of 1”+ thick cedar shakes which were taken off the roof last summer. All are dry, contain nails in some cases, and ready to burn.

Enough here to satisfy your kindling needs for years to come.

I’m on Hudson island. You must come and collect.

Old RV or Tent Trailer or Trailer Wanted

We are looking for a small RV 10-14FT trailer, Tent Trailer or basic trailer (only needs to travel 10 more miles in its life) that someone could donate for a Thetis Community project we are building.

We would be gutting it so the inside condition is not an issue, basically a box is what we need. A little rot is not a problem, mould would be a problem. Alternatively a trailer that we could build a box on would work.

Call us to see if what you have would work.

Thanks.
