Another Word to the Water Wise

Our Water Use Impacts are Cumulative

It is a poor but adequate analogy to think of our fresh-water aquifers as a bathtub that starts to fill only in October or November, a month after the winter rains start in earnest. While we don't know when or if that tub fills all the way up each year, we know that it stops filling in the Spring, when the rains are no longer "super saturating" the ground. All of the groundwater we use after the "tub" stops filling in May or June, lowers the water level and increases the chances of aquifers drying up and of salt-water intrusion in your well and/or the wells of your neighbors.

The point being. We need to practice a culture of water conservation over the entire year, and it will become ever more critical as climate change alters our patterns of precipitation with longer, hotter and drier summers and as the population of Thetis and the size of houses and cabins continues to increase.

Fire Weather Forecast

We are still in EXTREME. We hope to drop down a Danger Class by the end of the weekend. We appreciate your patience with the conditions and support.

Weather Forecast

SYNOPSIS:

Wet and cooler weather is arriving for the Coastal Fire Centre, bringing a welcomed drop-in fire activity through early next week. Two weather systems will move through the region starting today, bringing showers this afternoon and heavier rain by Friday. The first system brings light showers and breezy southwest winds, while the second delivers significant rainfall with up to 50-80 mm on western mountain slopes and 10-40 mm elsewhere. Winds will also increase, with gusts reaching 30–40 km/h by Friday morning. Smoke in central areas may linger today but should ease with the rain.

OUTLOOK:

Saturday to Monday: With the low-pressure system being the dominant feature over the weekend, we will continue to see some instability throughout the fire centre. Saturday morning showers and rain will be pulled north giving southern zones some late day clearing but staying below seasonal temperatures. Winds will continue to be SW with stronger gusts on the North Coast. Sunday and Monday are similar with scattered showers and some periods of rain, though locations and amounts are hard to nail down at this time. Mid next week brings a return to a warming and drying trend as a weather system bringing high pressure will build over the province from the south.

Nature House - Saturday, August 16

Meadow Valley Communal Garden (all ages)

The tour will begin at 9:30 AM and will last approximately one hour.

Location: 412 Klahowya (Drive past the main driveway - the garden is in the valley behind the horse barn)
Wheelchair accessible

You’ve probably heard of community gardens, but have you ever visited a communal garden? This Saturday, we invite you to explore the Meadow Valley Communal Garden, the final stop on the summer garden tour. Unlike a community garden, where individuals tend their own plots, a group of 11 works the land together, sharing the planning, planting, weeding, watering, harvesting, and the bounty! It’s a space where tools, resources, knowledge, and effort are pooled, and every week feels like opening a CSA box filled with fresh, homegrown food.

1pm-3pm Drop in at the Sea Life Centre (all ages)
Location:Telegraph Harbour Marina

J Come and visit our new and diverse tunicates! The ocean dwelling chordates might be our closest relative in the tank outside of the fish. Discover the simple body plan of the sea squirt while tracing the path of water through their two siphons!

Shasta Daisy Marguerite

For weeks now, I have been procrastinating planting this flower.

But today I dug a hole for this aptly named flowering plant and used soil that I bought years ago on Thetis and brought it to Calgary. I now know why I took so long.

In memory of Veronica.
