Community Gathering on Sept 30 - All Welcome

Sept 30, 2021 is Canada's first "National Day for Truth and Reconciliation."
The day is intended to "honour the lost children and Survivors of residential schools, their families and communities," and to acknowledge that "public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliation process."

A simple community gathering is planned outside at Forbes Hall from 11am - noon, with light refreshments to follow.

All community members and friends of all ages are invited and warmly welcomed to be part of a facilitated sharing circle where we will honour the spirit of the day and share some intentions with each other.

Suggestions and requests, if possible:

-masks are not legally required outdoors based on the PHO, but masking is welcome and we will distance to a safe and comfortable level for all involved.

-please bring a pen (ballpoint or felt pen) for a short writing component

-umbrellas are recommended as the forecast sounds like rain

-children are welcome to fully participate - there is also a volunteer who will care for children as needed

-please park along the road and walk in, unless there is a mobility  or physical challenge that requires closer parking, as we will likely meet in the parking area

-please bring your own tissues if you think you will bless our gathering with a few tears, which are welcome

-there will be opportunities to very briefly share through writing or words, but nothing is required so if you prefer to come and listen, you are welcome

- we plan to start on time at 11:00 so if you come late, please join in a way respectful of the Circle as an intentional space that we co-create together.

-wearing orange would be really great

Thanks to those involved in planning this simple gathering on sort notice and thanks to everyone in our community for considering coming in the spirit of truth and reconciliation.

TICA: A Sincere Thank You

On September 18, 2021, members of our community joined in the dedication and celebration of the Grand Opening of Forbes Hall Community Centre.

It was one of the largest groups ever assembled there, with the sun striking us with its brilliance in between bouts of rain.  People stood or sat while listening to the emotional and sincere dedications by Penelakut elder Florence James, artist Maynard Johnny Jr, and speaker Rocky James. We celebrated as Maynard's beautiful artwork was dramatically unveiled to reveal its installation on our hard-earned new community hall.  We watched and listened to Cody Jack and his group of Penelakut dancers and drummers as they powerfully shared their culture with us, while their feet hammered into the soil our connectedness with each other.

After several islanders spoke about community participation and its accomplishments, Maynard Johnny Jr and Ella Kasting, great-granddaughter of one of the original donors of the land, cut the red ribbon announcing the official opening of Forbes Hall Community Centre.

The celebration ended in the sunshine, with a well-enjoyed BBQ lunch.

We thank the many people who contributed to the success of the day: the event planners, the speakers, those who set up and took down all the equipment (while trying to outguess the weather), and those who prepared, cooked, and served the food.  A sincere thank you to all the Penelakut members who came over to celebrate with us, laying significant building blocks to the bridging of our communities.

And, lastly, thanks to the more than two hundred people who came to be part of this community milestone: your presence was profound.

Sincerely

Thetis Island Community Association Board of Directors

TIVFD: Yard Waste Permits

Yard Waste Fire Permits will be available on and after October 1st online at www.thetisislandfire.ca.  The permit will be issued for the month of October.

Individuals applying for the permit to burn woody debris yard waste (no garbage or construction lumber) are required to check the Ministry of Environment’s VENTING INDEX for smoke control to determine if the conditions are good for producing smoke on the day of the burn pile ignition.  All burn piles must conform to the size and safety regulations for Class 2 outdoor fires.

The Ministry of Environment’s Smoke Control Regulations are set in place to protect your and your neighbours’ and the residents of the region’s lungs from smoke injury and disease.  Thetis Island is located in a High Sensitivity Zone and specific regulations for High Sensitivity Zones are in force.  Restrictions on how long and for how many days you can produce smoke are set out in the BC Laws available in the link, the relevant sections of which are quoted below.

https://www.bclaws.gov.bc.ca/civix/document/id/complete/statreg/152_2019/#section18

Please note that open burning must cease four hours before sunset.

Division 1 — High, Medium and Low Smoke Sensitivity Zones

Allowable periods of open burning in high smoke sensitivity zone

18   A person with possession or control of a parcel of land that is

(a)private land,

(b)smaller than 64 hectares, and

(c)within or partially within a high smoke sensitivity zone

must ensure that open burning on the parcel of land is carried on no more than

(d)12 days or portions of days in each calendar year, and

(e)6 days or portions of days in each calendar month.

Open burning for less than one day in high or medium smoke sensitivity zone

19   A person may carry on open burning in either a high smoke sensitivity zone or a medium smoke sensitivity zone for a period that is less than one day if the person ensures that the following conditions are met with respect to the open burning:

(a)in the case of a high smoke sensitivity zone, the vegetative debris is seasoned vegetative debris;

(b)if ventilation forecasts are available for the general area in which the open burning is located, the following is met:

(i) that

(A)a ventilation forecast for that area is obtained on the day, but before, the open burning starts, or

(B)a custom ventilation forecast for that area is obtained on the day before or on the day, but before, the open burning starts;

(ii) the forecast obtained under subparagraph (i) (A) or (B) is "good" for the day the open burning starts;

(c)the open burning starts not earlier than one hour after sunrise;

(d)the open burning ends by 4 p.m. or two hours before sunset, whichever is later, on the same day the open burning starts.

Open burning for more than one day in high smoke sensitivity zone

20   A person may carry on open burning in a high smoke sensitivity zone for a consecutive period that is less than 2 days if the person ensures that the following conditions with respect to the open burning are met:

(a)the vegetative debris is seasoned vegetative debris;

(b)if ventilation forecasts are available for the general area in which the open burning is located, the following is met:

(i) that

(A)a ventilation forecast for that area is obtained on the day, but before, the open burning starts, or

(B)a custom ventilation forecast for that area is obtained on the day before or on the day, but before, the open burning starts;

(ii) the forecast obtained under subparagraph (i) (A) or (B) is

(A)"good" for the day the open burning starts, and

(B)"good" or "fair" for the second day of the open burning;

(c)the open burning starts not earlier than one hour after sunrise;

(d)unlit piles of the vegetative debris are ignited, and remaining unlit vegetative debris is added to the ignited piles of the vegetative debris, only during the period that starts one hour after sunrise and ends 4 hours before sunset on the day the open burning starts;

(e)the open burning ends by 4 p.m. on the second day of the open burning.

The fire department urges you to refrain from burning raked leaves and instead compost them or use as mulch around tour garden over the winter.

Looking for Those with Understanding of Holy Books

I am looking for Thetisians who have a firm footing in the Holy books of their religion.

I am looking for people who 1. Are current practitioners, 2. Know well the contents of their Holy book(s), and 3. Are knowledgeable about when the books were written and the historical environment at the time of their writing.

This is a personal request/plea/desire to learn more not from hefty books, but from dedicated practitioners.  It has nothing to do with TSOP, although in due time and after deliberation the topics could be presented to the Society.

I believe Christianity is covered.  However, dedicated Buddhists, Jains, Jews, Hindus, Moslems and Sikhs are welcome.

The purpose is to establish the time of the founding of the particular religion and to understand why it has become popular - not its good/bad manifestations later in history.

If you are such a person, please contact Johann at jcerny07@gmail.com
